Bingo! :thmbsp: :D

Those are absolutely stunning pictures of that dirty stylus. I didn't realize crap could just build up on it like that...wow.

You think that's bad? You should see what my record changer stylus looks like after a stack of 6 records! Seemingly clean records too! There's sometimes a huge chunk of dust that looks like an ungodly dustbunny from hell.
I've gotten into the habit of getting up every once and a while to brush it off.

So are you supposed to leave the thing resting on the magic eraser?

It's good to get-up every once in a while. :D

I've used ME since I first read about it on here two years ago and I swear by it. Cheap, easy to use, does a great job. And, as with most threads on this site, this has been an enjoyable education to read. Thanks to the OP for initiating it.

That's it, I'm buying me a damn Magic Eraser!! I gotta see what the fuss is all about.
And don't "leave it lying " on the block , just dunk it into the block after each side 2 or 3 times .well that's what I do anyway . Plus it would be good to start with a clean stylus as it then will keep it that way week after week. I'm not sure how it works on old dirty stylus , might take many dunks to start to loosen up the crud ??

A different good to get up is what's seem healthy about playing vinyl on a semi - auto, you get exercise flipping the LP over and standing at the TT cleaning and prepping it and the LP, with CD's, you pop in fifty discs and sit there, not passive at all, I swear I lost a lot pounds when I switched back to vinyl. lol

lol , get into home made RCM machine washing and you will get your exercise , bending , standing , crouching , spinning .It's hard to do more than a few a time , but I may be out of shape ... just a bit :D

What's the difference in using them wet or dry?

The ME is a Melamine Foam, with a latticework of millions of little sharp fibers. When the Stylus is cued into the foam, those fibers scrape-abrade the Stylus, and remove gunk, films, dust, dirt. Since this material is so much softer than a Diamond Stylus, no harm comes to the Stylus. By dunking with the force of prescribed VTF. no harm as well will come to Cantilever, and thier suspension components. When used wet, it was found that this fiber matrix collapses, and then it is not anywhere near as effective as dry.

Dry cleaning has the benefit as well, of not having any possibility of fluids climbing-wicking up the Cantilever from capillary action, and having any detrimental effects on the Stylus Bonding Adhesives, or Suspension Components. Mark

Okay I went and bought some Magic Eraser's and I was skeptical at first but just dropping the stylus into it four or five time to me would not do much.

Boy was I wrong, what does this stuff do?

My Denon DL-110 is much smoother especially the voices even my wife commented and that is really something.

Go figure you guys were right again.

ME is the way to go!

of course the stylast or discwasher sc2 brushes a should be part of the process before and after. on an every play routine, i use the stylast or sc2 before play and once a week or so, the ME.

i looked at my stylus with a hand held stylus microscope (40 or 50X) prior to cleaning. cleaned with the sc2, looked and saw an improvement BUT after the ME, the difference was clearly visible. WHAT a difference. crystalline!

the advice i have seen and use is to clean with the sc2 first, then the ME, then the sc2 again.

i hold the ME in my left hand, raise the arm off the rest, and set it down with just the vtf as force on the brush and brush back to front. then i set the stylus down on the ME a couple of times, then brush again.

i would NEVER try to do this with the arm in the rest anchor. the possibility of damaging the stylus/cantilever is much greater with a captive arm situation. the flexing of the suspension is no more than with playing the record if done MY way.

using solvents is usually a NO-NO. they can damage the suspension material unless VERY carefully used. of course sometimes it could be a necessity.
