Magic Eraser Skeptic No Longer

you don't need to lower the stylus on the m.e.,,,just very carefully use it and stroke the stylus w the m.e. like a brush...back to front..viola.........done...you'll never use anything else

I would not do that with my stylus. Dragging it against the M.E. is a bad idea according to several sources. This is because the fibers tend to grab the tip of the styli and you risk pulling it out and/or damaging your cantilever.

Just bought some ME and I cleaned my stylus per usual then dropped in on the ME and whataya know a little black dot was left on the ME. Oh and I think I heard a difference too!

Don't know if this makes a diff, but the website blurb (posted below) says it is water activated, so if you use it dry on a needle, will it still work???

"To remove more grime per swipe than the leading all purpose spray cleaner, reach for Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It’s a powerful multi-purpose cleaning pad with water-activated micro-scrubbers that reach into the grooves of the surface to lift and remove dirt around your home with water alone."

That's for cleaning shower stalls.

DRY for delicate styli!

So I have some but what are you supposed to do? wet it and then just dip the stylii onto it?
No, no. Just cut a block that will stand on your turntable deck about the same height as your turntable mat. Position your cartridge over it, and "cue" it down and up a few times.

That is all.

Hello DJ, Not sure if it was mentioned in this thread, but there are two forms/kinds of MR Clean Magic Eraser, there's the Blue one, which contains soaps/detergents, and should not be used, and then there is the pure white ME, which contains no soaps.

I've even seen them that are 50/50 both blue, and white.
Buy the one that is pure white through, and through, and use it dry, never wetted with anything.

And to add to another's post, about using it like a Stylus Brush, dragging it across a Stylus, that is a definite no-no, and a recipe for certain disaster.

Especially, with today's modern Cartridges, which many are using ultra thin, and very fragile Boron Cantilevers, and tiny nude shank Stylus', there's sure not a hell of a lot of adhesive holding that Diamond to the Cantilever.
These are good reasons to as well veer away from Liquid Cleaners, or other more agressive methods of cleaning, like ultrasonics.

I know there are some who like thier little ultrasonic devices, and claim they've never had problems, but for myself, I sure would hate to have a mishap happen just once, taking that risk, and I'm then looking at a $1000 re-tip! Mark

There are also several versions of the magic eraser out now. You want the original. I believe the original is a purely mechanical scrubber, while some of the newer ones may have soaps or cleaners impregnated in them.

Edit: oops. Markd51 beat me too it!

Love the magic eraser.
Just a question though, if used regularly on a new stylus does this eliminate the need for stylus cleaner fluid?

I have a Technics SL-5 w/ an Ortofon. Any suggestions on how to use the ME on it?

I just got an SL-5, and judging by the way the table works I think you'll have to gently and carefully apply the ME to the stylus manually. I don't think there's any way to "dip" the stylus without the arm first moving over the spinning platter.

I have a small cube of the ME mounted on a base with double sided tape. I position it right near the platter where I can cue down onto it same as PM Summer is doing. I listen to the stylus settle into the material then cue it a few times to do the cleaning. After every LP I use LP-9 to clean the stylus of any residue then use a brush to drag off anything that may be there.

I was reluctant to use this product (fear of the unknown) but have had good luck so far. It seems to make a real difference. I play alot of new vinyl, some old, and it does help keep the stylus clean. I would suggest the cleaning solution periodically just to be sure there is no residue left behind. I know the ME is suppose to remove it but I like to wash the stylus off as well. LP-9 works nice with it. There were so many versions of the Magic Eraser I just took the one that said "Original". I was really worried about residue from soaps and stuff in the others.

for those of you that use the audio-technica 607 stylus cleaner fluid; if you use the brush attached to the cap won't all the debris that is taken off the stylus go into the bottle?
