Magnepan .7s in the cave!

IMG_0996.pngI’ve been wanting to improve on my MMGs, which are outstanding, and I just replaced the tweeter foils, with the .7s. They are just a bit larger but not too large for my space. This size difference is an incredible improvement! As great as the MMGs are, these are amazing, more of everything! They were listed on FB market place in NYC. The price was very fair, I auditioned them in the sellers tiny apartment. They will need the socks replaced, these have stains, and a cat enjoyed them for a bit. I’m ordered the charcoal dark grey color, side panels are dark cherry, so they will look very elegant. I made upright stands for the MMGs, which I’m using on the .7s. I’ll stain them to match the dark cherry side panels. I’m running them with my Def tech Supercube II sub, which is a perfect mate for Maggie’s. The sound is astounding, no box speaker can sound like these!
Magnepan told me these were built Dec 2016.
I’ll post pics of the sock replacement procedure when I get started.
Cheers!

Maggies are just amazing speakers, tho you might want to pull them further into your listening space.
My wife Emma says its like swimming in the music!

Thanks, and swimming in the music is a great way to describe them! I’ve got them further out than the pic appears. I know it’s not ideal with the big ADSs behind them, but it’s the space I have to work with. Sometimes I’ll put a plywood panel behind them for more sound reflection, but I don’t hear much difference.

Understood! We have an awkward listening space as well.
Its been 10 years since we last had a pair of mags (MG2C) and I ran them with a Volkswoofer to boost the bass end ...
but my gosh - play some old Sinatra or something beautiful recorded and they'll take your breath away .. (Try "One for the Road")

We had Tympani 1D speakers once, but most of the panels failed the day after we got it home ... :(

And they were just too large for the living room, so I sold them instead of going for a rebuild.

[Laughs] Had JBL L-100's in 1985 then upgraded to Magnapan Tympani III's and a Dynaco ST-400.

My neighbors hated those speakers, They shook the whole building...

What an exciting post Glenn! I'm still ALWAYS looking for a pair of these. I see them on FBM but, I'm no longer interested in driving long distances for anything on FB. I'm only interested regardless of price or appearance in finding things close to me in the Dallas area. Smiling at you that you got them!

The L-100s in the pic ore two of four, part of a quad system gifted to me a few weeks ago. All four sound perfect, and are nearly mint. The foam needs replacing on all the grills, and some Watcos applied to the cabs. These hadn’t been touched since they were removed from the factory boxes, except the the foal dampening rings on the tweeters. Not sure what I’ll do with them tho.

Thanks Garry!
I watched the various sites and when these showed up, I was excited. I sold some other gear to help pay for them. Well worth it!

Wall of sound! Those 2Cs were beautiful!

I replaced the original stained and cat damaged socks with charcoal grey socks from Magnepan. I discovered some cracks in the frames, clearly they fell over in their history. I glued and clamped them and they are solid now. The ribbons had some small delamination in some spots. I had leftover sealer from the MMG tweeter foil replacements, and used it to re-glue them down. The sock swap was straight forward, and they look great! I love the grey, dark cherry.

YES ... charcoal Grey socks with the dark Cherry is perfect! Just so it's said, I really do appreciate you posting your work as always Glenn. Your threads are always my go to because of the quality work you do.

Garry~

grey looks fantastic!

now I want to reskin my 3.7i, they're black and cherry and dark as midnight.

I'm surprised to see delamination on qr models, interesting that it's where the anti resonance buttons are.
it also looks like they took an impact.

Thank you Gary for your kind words! I haven’t had many projects lately and these were pretty easy and quick.

I was surprised as well. Luckily the Mylar wasn’t ripped nor the foils broken in that one area.
On the FB Magnepan Users group, there’s been some discussion and pics of ribbon delamination in small spots. Luckily I had both 3M77 and the sealer from Magnepan to fix those spots.
