These MG-1s use a mylar diaphragm with an alumium voice coil in a rectangular spiral pattern (sound familiar? Think Infinity EMIT tweeters here) equivalent to the form of what would be copper traces on a circuit board. The aluminum tends to oxidze with age; also, if overdriven, it can tend to vaporize.:tears:
If the panels have been rebuilt as indicated in that other thread, you're probably set. :thmbsp: Others mentioned tube amps to drive these which I'm sure is a great match. I had a SS class A amp so I just happened to try a Pass Aleph 3 and was stunned by the excellent results. Visitors were also amazed by the performance. You might want to consider using these "gently" at relatively low volume levels and in a smaller sized room for the best results.
improved? by who? the socks look original to me id be inspecting them for delamanation. they look to be early mg1s and if they had been worked on i would expect the scoks to be changed as well. the old wheatcloth says never been opened to me:scratch2:
Yes, I was going to chime in here after seeing the picture as these look identical to my pair of MG I improveds. I picked up a pair of these a couple of years ago from the original owners, with the shipping box. They had shipped the speakers back to Magnepan for the ribbon repairs (after having made the mistake of positioning them in direct sunlight in their living room, and experienced the delimanation "rattle of death" issue).
I have these in a 14x14 bedroom and have used them with a Sansui AU-20000 integrated amp (170 wpc). I like them ALOT when I sit in a VERY narrowly defined sweet spot in the room. I don't have listening time with other models to compare against (although I looked at a pair of MG IIb's at an estate sale last weekend).
