Magneplanar 2.7

I have a pair of Magneplanar 2.7's that I bought new in 1996, but have been in their box since 2001. I paid $2,000 for them new, and don't have any idea if Maggies keep their value. Anyone have an idea what they'd be worth today?

Can't give you a dollar amount for these, but in my experience, Maggies don't really hold their value any better or worse than most other audio equipment (assuming they're still fully functional - if there is voice coil separation then they'll have very little value, since while they're repairable, it's very labor intensive, or expensive if you have the factory do it). Figure they'll be worth well under $1000, though. I've seen 3.1s, a significantly better model with true ribbons, selling for $1400.
 
The 2.5 and 2.6 are two-way and have ribbons. They sell for just under a grand. There is no 3.1 speaker. The III is the first 3-series with a ribbon and a two-way Mylar panel. Next was the IIIa and these two sell for around a grand if in great shape, good ribbons, no banana peel of the wires and with the external crossovers. Sure you can pay 400 for a pair of Threes but there will be issues in most cases. The 3.3 and 3.5 are more then you get to the newer stuff and higher prices.

With the 2.7, Magnepan went with a flat wire instead of round for some or all of the three drivers, yes the 2.7 is a three-way, first 2-series to be a three-way. It seems to be the last of the 2-series speakers, too. I would expect these to sell for close to a grand also. But a pair did sell on the bay for 580 Local Pick-up Only, the true killer on the price. If you need to sell and ship, Magnepan will sell you a box to put them in and ship correctly.
 
Thanks for the replies and the info about the speakers. They sounded wonderful and worked great when I put them in the original box, but they haven't been used in over 14 years so hopefully they'll fire OK up when I get them out after the holidays. I was guessing probably around $800 so good to have your thoughts.
 
I have a pair of the 2.7QR's. You should fire them up, and try to play all frequencies. Depending on the quality assurance during build, and your climate controlled storage, there may be some delamination. Mine have delamated in a couple of spots, and they are only apparent during some bass notes and with certain tracks. The previous owner didn't have the time or patience to track them down so he offered them up on CL. Best if you can do a frequency sweep. I have seen them advertised locally for around $700 in working condition.
 
I paid $400 plus a Peachtree Dac-it for mine (used worth about $250)...so paid $650, basically. I liked them. My wife did not...too big. I sold them for $875 to a guy who really wanted this model to give the "Peter Gunn treatment." Full restoration and upgrade...I'm pretty sure he loves them now but have not heard them yet after they've been "Gunn'd."
