Major scroe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, what kind of power do Quads like? I've heard JohnVF's pair but I don't remember what amp he was using. How would they sound with my Bel Canto mono blocks? :scratch2:

AFAIK they like amps that are capable of low impedances. The original ESL for example would drop down to about 1 ohm.

JohnVF used a Pass something-or-other. The '63s aren't nearly as fussy as the '57s about power, having much better protection. They will throw a near-short across the terminals to protect themselves, so your amp needs to be able to handle that.

Per the manual, any quality amp between 50 and 100Wpc will do. The QUAD 405-2 is ideal, but any quality amp capable of handling the dips to 4 ohms at high frequencies is fine.

I've tried several amps, but currently run mine with the Sonos Connect:Amp, which delivers 55Wpc into 8 ohms, 127Wpc into 4 ohms, Class-D. The Bel Cantos should be great with these.

Quad ESL-63 SCROE pt. 2

Just back from GW. Picked up the SW-63 subwoofers for the ESL-63's. Also had a Mirage LFX-1 crossover. Paid $10.53 (tax included). So for the whole shooting match, less than $30.00. WAF is at 100%. A NICE Stack! The grill socks are dusty but not damaged, the top wood trim could use a little Howards, and a damp cloth should take care of the dust on the SW's as well as stands.

Hmm good to know :) I thought these would have been more difficult to drive.

Pics of goodwill price tag or it didn't happen. :D

I think I'm gonna go cry myself to sleep now. :tears:

Jokes aside.. this is the best score I've ever seen on this website.. ever.

Very nice! You got a hell of a deal there.
GW's in my area are way over priced for vintage electronics. The local SA is way better price wise, but 99% of the time, only crap is there.

Have you got them hooked up and playing yet ?

And yes , congrats on major "odd speaker" score . :D
Ok, in direct sunlight the membranes are loose. When I powered one up, dead silence, the other made a scratching sound. Added a source, did get music from both speakers, but still heard the "scratching sound" from the same speaker. The sound I now hear is that of a deflating ego.

Basically no deals anywhere around NYC and surrounding areas regarding QUALITY items. Not CL either, ebay is usually less expensive if 1/2 the cost at times. Issue is too much expendable money here. Cheap junk, yes it is everywhere for cheap.

well nuts . It still sounds like you got a score and now will take a little time and $ to get them up and running . Could always flip them as well . You still are in the plus from what I have heard here .

No worries, there are three experts in the US who can get these working perfectly. I used Kent at estatsolution.com - excellent service. If cost is an issue, you could probably flip the Gradients to more than cover it. I have no experience with the Gradients, but JohnVF didn't care for them, IIRC.

This is still a major SCROE!!!! You have a pair of superb speakers. Love the "odd speaker" tag. :D

Actually, there's a pair of the Pro Monitor version of these in NYC on Bartertown, fully refurbished, at an extremely good price...

If this sounds like a sizzling sound, this is arcing between the high voltage plates. This is the classic failure dur to aging. It is definitely fixable but requires complete disassembly of the speakers. If one has it the other one will be close behind.

They are well worth the cost of restoration but specialists are needed. You local repair guy will not suffuce. The work is not out of the reach of a DIY guy with good hand tools and confidence to deal with electrostatic concepts.

The membranes you see as loose are the dust covers. They can be tightened with a good sized hair dryer. Any tears, however, will require replacement of the sheeting.

Most parts are available from the Quad importer or from one of the specialists.

You have encountered a set of some of the best speakers available. They will serve you well but can be close to 30 years old. Like any old car, use caution 'driving' them until they have been restored.

You'll be glad you did.

Cheers,

David

You had to expect they would need work or they wouldn't have been at good will. Chances are their original owner found out how expensive they would be to fix and decided not to spend the money.

Well, one can certainly hope :)

But yes, unfortunately that is a very good point. Regardless though, you lucked out huge. Getting the matching subs and crossover? Icing on the cake man.

Even if you decided not to invest into them, there's no doubt you will be able to find someone who would want to.
