Marantz 1122dc pop/crackling on phono only

Hi AK community,

Hoping someone can help me find some answers ASAP on a 1122dc I just acquired.

It was a little dirty but otherwise in fine condition. Everything seems to be smooth with the exception of the phono inputs. When I play records, there is a slight but very noticeable crackling/pop every 5 seconds or so.

When I play through AUX, the sound is clean.

Any pointers on what this could be and how I can fix it?

Ideally you would first eliminate the turntable as the source of the noise....either by playing it through a different amp or playing a different turntable thru the Marantz.

Once you are sure the problem is with the Marantz, I woud guess that the issue is in the phono amp/equalizer board/section. Is the noise in both channels?

I have played it through another amp and it’s definitely the Marantz.

yes, both channels have the problem.

If it is the phone amp / equalization board, which components should I be replacing?
 
It’s probably a bad transistor on the phono board, but replace the electrolytic caps too while you’re in there.
 
Heck, replace everything everywhere. That'll fix it! Assuming no mistakes are made along the way.

Odd that problem is on both channels. I will have to look at phono board schematic to see what parts are common to both channels.

Sorry, but I had trouble with the service manual/schematic. It seems to have a mismatch between the parts list and the schematics/board assemblies. The only part in the phono section common to both channels is C427...but the manual shows it as a 470uf cap, and that doesn't seem right.

I could well be on the wrong track here. Sorry not more help.

I wanted to double check the problem was affecting the phono exclusively so I hooked it up to a preamp and ran that through the aux input. The crackling was still there. So it’s not isolated to phono. I also streamed tidal through an Audioengine B-fi to see what would happen and the sound came through clean. Any reason why this would not have the same sound issues?

so now I’m thinking it’s not the phone but rather something else.

just trying to investigate as much as possible before I commit to a bigger project than I can handle.

An easier way is to use your smartphone or iPod and patch into the phono. Just make sure you turn the volume way down as it will be way overloading at normal phone volume.
At around 30 percent volume, you should be able to listen for crackles and pops. If you think that it's not just phono stage, again plug the phone/iPod into the preout jack on the Marantz. Now your phone is the preamp. Again make sure the volume is down to start. Again listen for pops and crackles. What you are doing is narrowing down the board your problems lie. I am suspecting the preamp board, but really could be a few possibilities

I’ve done this and there is a more prominent crackle and pop in the phono output vs the aux. although the AUX still has some static. I’m assuming this is now a combination of issues.

Im looking at replacing the speaker relay as well as the transistors son the pre amp.

Any other recommendations?
 
Maybe your power supply is the culprit? Start at the beginning and verify your power supply is looking normal. Is both channels effected on phono and aux??
