Hey AK,
I bought a basket case 1150 about 2 years ago and managed to find the pieces that were missing and replaced the broken shaft. I was able to get it going and adjust the amps and then I started using it as my “outdoor” system. It played fine for a week or two and all of a sudden, heavy static from both channels. I turned it off and decided to try to find the problem ( I do not claim to be a tech, I can solder, replaced parts with like parts and use a meter. I have recapped and adjusted quite a few amps, but hunting down a problem is not in my orbit). Since the static was heavy and across both channels, I thought maybe a power issue, so I recapped and adjusted the power supply, worked again for another few weeks and then same issue. I then decided to recap the tone-amp board and when I was done, I had no sound at all and no matter what I did, it would not play. So, I decided to send to my go-to guy in Idaho, not cheap from AZ, and have him see if he could find the problem. Well, when it got there, it worked fine and he could not duplicate either the no sound or the heavy static. At this point, I asked him to replace the power supply transistors and the transistors on the tone amp and then run it a while. It ran fine for a couple of weeks and so he sent it back. I put it back as my “outside” amp (in the house, but speakers outside) and it played for a couple of months and then bam, heavy static. Fed up, I put it in a closet and put a 1070 in its place. Last week I dug out my tools to fix a 4140, managed to get it going with the help of AK and since the table and tools were out, I hooked up the 1150 again on some $8 thrift store speakers (actually not bad for bench speakers) and darned if it didn’t work fine. I had it on a dim bulb and it was playing fine for a day, today I turned it on and let it play at low, low volume. After about 15 minutes, heavy static, bulb starts getting bright, static gets less, bulb dims, static increases, the bulb gets bright again …. Repeat. So, whatever is going on appears to draw a good amount of power when it happens. I really have no idea where to begin, I know it is circuit related and not a dirty control or switch. It happens on both channels and the audio source can no longer be heard, only static. When it was on the dim bulb and cycling, the audio would return when the bulb got bright and the static would decrease. I am looking for any advice, I am thinking about changing the filter cap, but it is a dual cap and I’m not sure I want to tackle that. Thanks again Rich
