Marantz 1515 won't power up

I see there is a previous thread with a similar problem, but no solution offered.

I am trying to bring a Marantz 1515 back to life for a friend. A full inspection shows nothing out of the ordinary except for a "slightly" dodgy power switch.
I cleaned it up with contact cleaner and the function returned.

Still, now power. Now heat, no lights, no audible clicks.

All fuses read as good. No bad capacitors as far as I can see.

I'm open to suggestions as to where to look for the issue.

Bypass the pwr switch? A schematic of the area would help.

If your 1515 is an international model with the voltage selector dial on the back, there is an internal fuse board that you also need to check. (see photos)

Fuses (red arrow) on Power Supply board:

In both cases check the main fuse holder on the back panel.

• If you have the U.S. unit, check the voltage on the unswitched AC outlet on the back panel by plugging in a lamp and see if it lights up. You do not need the power switch to be on.
• You won't hear a relay "click" because this model does not have a relay.
• You may not see lights if they are all burned out.
• What do you mean when the "function" returned after cleaning the power switch? How was this tested? Are you saying that the receiver worked for a bit or that the switch now works mechanically?
• Have you plugged in some speakers and added an FM antenna and tried to dial in a station.
• Do the meters move at all when power is turned on?

I'll try to answer all of your concerns, this is the U.S version, no power at all (and yet the outlet on the rear will power an accessory, such as a lamp), no lights or meter action, I have NOT plugged in any speakers (didn't see the point). I have changed the main amp transistor along with updating the thermal compound. I have tested the unit with the front panel taken out of circuit. In EACH case, when making any change, I have swapped out the 1 amp fuse at fp02. Every time I replace that fuse, and turn the unit on, it blows. I even swapped out the transformer, but the fuse continues to blow. I've pulled the rectifier diode set to test, and it measures as good. Now, I am looking at any glue around the capacitors, to see if it may have come into contact with other nearby components, causing a short. That's my next step. Cleaning out that glue and replacing any part it may have touched. I'm still open to suggestions.

You need to approach troubleshooting systematically.
Here is what you describe:

1. Marantz 1515, U.S. Version
2. "No power at all." - Unswitched outlet does get AC power because it is directly connected to the AC line cord before the power switch S001.
3. Keeps blowing 1A FP02 fuse when power is turned on. Swapped out transformer, but fuse still blows.
4. Tested rectifier diodes, OK.

According to the SM, FP02 is only present on the Canadian version (C), not the US version (U).
Do you have fuses FP01, FP02, FP03, FP04 and F001?

If you do have the fuse board PP00 and only FP02 is blowing, it is connected to J803 which is connected to diode Q814 and cap C819.
This feeds 45V to Q805 to produce 32VDC.
32V feeds the P400 Phono amp and P100 Tuner.
Check the following components visually and by testing with diode tester and capacitance tester:

1. Q814 diode
2. C819 0.01uF
3. C805 470uF
4. C806 220uF

You can try removing Q805 and see if the fuse FP02 still blows.

As far as the dial lights, the voltage comes off of a separate transformer tap and fuse (FP01). If no lights, then either FP01 is also blown or the main fuse F001 (on the back of the receiver) is also blown. Even if FP02 is blown, as long as FP01 is good, then the lamps should come on when the power switch is pressed.
