Marantz 170 DC Amp has no power on/off how do you properly manage connecting to power?

Hello,

I recently purchased a Marantz 170 DC Amp and have it paired with Marantz 2270 as the preamp. There is no power on/off button on the Amp. The manual says to plug it into the switched AC plug in the back of the Pre Amp (2270) - That works fine, except when I go to turn off the 2270 there is a loud pop from the amp suddenly being shut down. I read that you need to plug Amp into separate power strip and turn off and on that way.

My question - is the popping when turning off a problem other than annoying sound? It seems kind of a pain to have to include a powerstrip and use that everytime. I can live with the pop when turning off but not if I could cause damage to the gear or speakers.

Please advise. Thanks.

That sounds like it could cause damage and I would recommend discontinuing the procedure that you are following until others can confirm. How are you connecting the 170 DC to the 2270?
 
The 170 and 2270 are connected using RCA cables pre amp out to amp in with the 2270 plugged into wall socket for power and 170 plugged into 2270 switched ac plug input on back of unit.
 
The 2270 switched outlet is only intended for 100w max current draw, the 170dc probably requires more juice than that. I'm not sure what the 170 requires bit it should say so on the back, my guess is that it's well above 400w power consumption. I would not plug into there any longer.

Use a switchable power strip instead. You'll be stressing your already weak power switch otherwise.
