Marantz 2215B popped it's top

Well Team,
I'll call it a tentative success! :rockon:
He's been up and running on and off for the last few days, using phono, aux, tape and FM inputs.
Seems to be sounding great to me!
Thanks for sharing all of the wisdom.
Now on to the next one!

Yep, that's the only thing I changed.
Interesting to me that it being reversed caused another cap to pop, but not itself.
(Just shows how little I know!)
 
Why did you use mylar for C723 and C724? 1uF/50V electrolyt.
They're not coupling caps.
I'm starting on a 2215B today. I'm curious what to find......
 
From what I'm seeing on AK, a lot of people are using films for anything under about 4.7uF if lead spacing permits. They are non-polar, they usually have closer tolerances, and they are less failure prone than electrolytics. On the recommendations of several here, I use them all over Marantz receivers with great results.

I just seems to be the rage at the moment to use the film caps.
If I'm understanding what I'm reading correctly, the polypropylene WIMA films seem to be the preferred film cap amongst the awesome AK gurus.
I used the the polyester Mylar cap simply due to local availability (although it seems to be an acceptable alternative)

Thanks for explanation, that's way better than I could have put it!
Raises a question though; With the small caps, is there a time to not use a film as a replacement? Or is it ok to wholesale swap them out whenever you see this smaller ones?

That one is above my pay grade. Hopefully one of the gurus will chime in with some guidance on when to use film replacements and particularly if there are times when you just shouldn't do it. It seems I saw someone say they like to use them for <4.7uF if they will fit.
 
It's a bit overdone I guess. You use film because it behaves better in the audio signal. That's where electrolyts suck massif. Where NP caps are already much better.
As a coupling cap, yes, but here it's got not much to do with the audio signal. It's inbetween the 55V powerline and ground. 63V would be a better choice, although it has worked for years with this 1uF/50V.
As you say, if you put them in for the sake of it, go ahead.
I just think it's over the top.
 
BTW, do you know how much a Wima (Weimaraner according to the Chinese) MKS2 costs in the 1u to 4.7u range?
There are 8 on the toneboard already.
Doubles the price of my 2215....
