Marantz 2220B 'LOUD' popping noise!

After about 20 minutes of use I got a LOUD popping noise. It sounds like if you were to drop a needle onto a record very violently and the volume is set to 11. I had to run over and shut it down. To be fair, it has NOT been restored but I cleaned the pots pretty good.

Not sure what this could be but I am open to any suggestions. I am in the process of cataloging CAPS to start a rebuild. This just caught me off guard.

If it's popping on all functions it's likely a bad transistor on the preamp board or the differential pair of transistors in the amp module front end. From the loudness of the popping I'd guess it's the latter. The transistors are 2SA763's and KSA992's are great in there. If you have access to a meter with the transistor Hfe function, get a bag of 20 and match up a set. Readings within 5 are excellent but just do the best as you can. If they're too far off in gain, the dc offset cannot be adjusted properly so if you don't have a meter just be prepared to swap in a few until the offset can be adjusted in. Good luck!
