Marantz 2220B Recap/Restore

Got started on the recap and cleaning up of my $20.00 yard sale Marantz 2220B. So far I have recapped the Phono Board with all Elna Silmic II, and also did the Power Supply Board with Elna Silmic II and Panasonic FC. This little guy is very musical, I am loving it. Just waiting for my shipment from Digi-Key to come so I can do the Tone/Pre Board, Amp Board and the main filter caps. See the before and after pics below.

Looks pretty good. I haven't used Elna Silmic II yet in a restore, planning on using them in my Soundcraftsmen preamp. How do you like them?
 
are you going to do, pre-amp and main amp too?
Don't forget FM, the stereo decoders like new 35v 220µF/16V100µf.

And a tip: i always replace the tantalium caps too. ( blue and red/white points)

Yes I have the caps ordered for the pre and main amp, I missed the tantalium caps they are 2.2uf 25V and I need to get them next time I place an order.
 
Got time to prep the main filter caps, soldered these lugs on. I tried to order the lug type from Parts Connection but they were temporarily out so I used these Elna for Audio LAO I had originally ordered. Thanks to Tom @ Vintage Electronics for the idea.

by the way, I have a lamp like yours and couldn't live without it, and I found it makes for a good circular macro lamp because you can shoot straight threw the magnifying glass.

Thanks! You are right with out this lamp not much would be getting done, I will have to try a macro shot through it when I do the next board.
 
Got the Filter Caps in and is sounding even better, just have the pre/tone board and the amp board to do, got the caps today. Some shots of before during and finished.

Hi. I am new to all this though audio has been a hobby and career for many years. I never learned much about repair. I just found a 2115B to cut my teeth on. I have enjoyed reading your forum and learning about recapping. I have not had as much luck with info about replacing resisters or transistors. Let me know if there are some good threads or links.

Nice work as usual Pat! I really followed your shoot out, it guided me a little when I did my 2285B. I have one question though, WHAT is it with 2220's this week and this group??????? And where is my $20, 2220????

Nice work, how did the Elna's affect the sound?

I know this is an old thread. I like the sound from my 2220B and considering to recap. I have sourced nichicon UFG and UES caps and wanted to ask about your experience with Elna caps.

I recapped the power supply board and adjusted the voltage then I realized that I am hearing a clicking sound from my phono input. I don't remember this before. I am condidering to recap the phono input next. Did you replace any other parts besides the capacitors on the phono? I am wondering if I have some bad transistors in the circuit.
 
I know this is an old tread but recently I've dug out my old Marantz 2220B and started to recondition it. I do have an electronics background, but its been too long and most of my knowledge was transferred over to Data Communications during the 90's and 2000's.

As part of my reconditioning project I decided to revive my 2220B, my research brought me to this site and a number of pages discussing what Capacitors (i.e Nichicon, Panasonic, etc) to use and which models or series.

To be clear, I'm only asking the question and have zero interest in starting a battle. As stated I don't have enough knowledge to know what the "right" answer is.

My question.
Why did you chose Audio Grade Capacitors (Tonerex, or Nichicon KG) for your power supply vs Capacitors specifically designed power supplies (i.e. Nichicon UPW). From everything else I've read, audio capacitors typically have a higher ESR and my not be optimal for powersupplies.

Capacitor manufacturers are making it easier for us to decide. There are no electrolytic audio capacitors in the market anymore. As for films, WIMA and Panasonic make good quality polypropylenes.

It is always better to use the correct capacitor in its intended application. A UPW cap is better suited for use in the power supply section of the circuit. However, an FG cap will also work in the circuit. Sometimes, you use what is available rather than having to purchase new capacitors to better match the application. A 2220B is a relatively low power receiver and there would be many capacitors that work well in its power supply circuit however; it is best to use capacitors that are matched for use with the circuit application.
