Marantz 2220B vs Yamaha CA-600

hello everyone!
Would you trade a perfect condition Yamaha ca-600 for a marantz 2220b that is cosmetically perfect and working but there is no sound out of one channel??? Thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Yes I could most likely fix the marantz myself.

Not really.

I don't think it's that much better than the Yamaha. Of course, they both have a distinct "sound" and if you like the Marantz sound, then go for it. But they are both around the same price in working condition no? +/- 200 bucks?

I just realized I implied the Marantz is better... it's not... it's just different... and IMO the Yamaha is better looking.
 
I've never had a marantz, everyone says they sound amazing and I love the look! But I also love the Yamaha and it's sound, I've always really wanted a marantz and this is so far my best opportunity. The Yamaha goes for 130-170 working and eBay had a working 2220b from 150-300
 
Additionally, I want to add that I've bought a few BPC turntables like the one in the picture (Denon mostly, not Sony but same difference) and I really like the bang for the buck. A Denon DP-7F I sold to a very happy buyer surprised me at how nice it sounded.
 
thw Sony in the picture was basically used a few times and put back in the box, got it for $5 from a neighbor and it does the trick, although one day I'd like something better, but for now, I like it!

If you can, buy a 2220b that's working and compare to your Yammy then sell the one you like less. Marantz has the collector appeal but that doesn't necessarily translate into "it's the best sounding" Like cigars, wine and jazz albums, the best one is the one you like the best.

you can try improving it with a better cart. If you're new to the turntable game (like me) the P-Mount is a great way to try new stuff to see if you like or can even tell the difference. It just plugs in with no need for setup. Well, it plugs in and screws in, but you don't have to go through the complicated measuring and weighing that a regular cart requires. Plus they are cheeep.

NO! The 2220B is very nice but you will have to repair this one. Even if you do it yourself no tunes till you do!


Spend $$ on a different table and cart.

Meh... maybe. I dunno. I hope for the best, but until I hear it, I'm never sure. I can say that when I do hear an improvement, I'm very happy about it! But if I don't, then I'm glad I bought from Amazon. :)

He has a great point. Unless you're going to repair the receiver yourself, get ready for a very large bill from a tech to go through, find and repair the problem in your new non-working unit. Most charge $50 to $75 just to look and then the average repair bill is $200ish bucks.
 
Thanks for the advice! Here's what I'm thinking, get the marantz for hopefully around $100. Fix it compare the two, then keep them both. I'll unload an hk330 ( I've got 2) and buy a better phonograph

That's what I was thinking. Still, What will $200 get you today. Those vintage Marantz where Beautiful IMO with decent tuners and phono stages, and SQ as good or better than most other receivers when kept out of clipping. The Yamaha is no slouch either of course, and in terms of performance I think it might be more a matter of different sound, Not better.

Yeah, I'd tend to agree, the yamaha CA-600 is ok but not really involving. Things get very interesting at the CA-800, -1000 level. I would favour
my humble Rotel RX-202 MkII over the CA-600, certainly a different engauging sound. Also both items are vintage so they both should be
refurb'd. So big deal that one channel is down as long as you can DIY. Another vote for the Marantz.
 
Generally speaking I'll take a Yamaha any day.In this case with this low power I may find the Marantz a bit more engaging.
