Marantz 2230 recap & LED conversion

Pat yes they are leylons. I was not sure what the label read. Ideally I'd like to elnas back, because that is what is there already. They have lasted this long, so they must have been ok. Ideally some cerafine of silmics ii's, do they seem to be the caps of choice?

You may choose to use other caps, many like Panasonic FC for the Power Supply and Elna Silmic II or Nichicon for signal path. I will be sending you what you need for the Preamp.

My personal preference is to stick with caps from the major manufacturers, e.g. Nichicon, Panasonic, United Chemicon, Elna, Sanyo, Vishay, and Cornell Dublier. I also tend to use low ESR, high temp caps for most applications. Specifically, I will use Panasonic FM, Nichicon PW, UCC KZE types as these have high ripple specs and long life characteristics. The exception being caps in the signal path, where I will typically use film caps for 4.7uF and smaller values and Nichicon MUSE for higher values.

This is a great thread for me as I just picked up a 2230 off of ebay and plan to recap it, starting with the power supply. Perfect timing!

Ok, So I am going to start on getting components together for the power amplifiers.

I'm not very good at reading the schematics to tell which caps are related to the sound and which to the power. Here is an image of my blown power amp just for reference.

I can post the schematic if that will help?

Ok here it is.

A jpg of the full system and a close up of the P750 amplifier

I don't know how clear that is, the whole schematic in pdf was too big to link.

Here is what it looks like are on your amp boards:

You need:

C751 .47uf 25V use Wima MKS2 1uf 50V has 5mm lead spacing/or Silmic II
C752 100uf 50V You could use Panny FC here if you wanted
C753 1uf 50V use same as above C751
C754/C755 47uf 50V Elna Silmic II
C757 22uf 35V You could use Panny FC here if you wanted

The panny FC are 105 degree rated if that is importiant to you.

Of course you have to double above because there are 2 boards.

You can increase the C752 cap, it provides local supply decoupling and filtering. I suggest Panasonic FR series, which a new series with lower ESR and better ripple ratings than FC. It may be the replacement for the FM series, which many prefer over the FC series, when available.

Hi Guys, thanks for the info. Ill be sure to apply!

patfont looking at the schematic and my kit from IRM there is a few differences between what Robert and you say for some values. Please don't get me wrong I'm not doing a 'he says, but he says' comparison, I just wonder why the differences. It was really fyi tbh. :)

You suggest
C751 1uf 50V
C752 100uf 50V
C753 1uf 50V
C754/C755 47uf 50V
C757 22uf 35V

IRM supplied[/]
C751 1uf 50v
C752 100uf 63v
C753 10uf 35v
C754&5 47uf 50v
C757 22uf 50v

Anyway I'm going to get my shopping basket ready and go looking for the caps you suggest. Also with regard to the schematics, I just wanted to understand how to read it to know which caps are directly in the signal path. Really so I could read for my self what caps are doing what. I don't want to keep bothering you for the info on what caps to put where.

Have a look at the image below to see what I had included for the P750 boards. Some of them I have not a clue as to what brand they are, maybe someone could enlighten me? I see leylon, epcos and some other brand with a logo of (M)?

Please see this link for C753 mistake and check your actual cap to make sure it is correct. 10uf 35V (Silmic II) should be correct I was going off the schematic.

He just went up on the voltage on those other 2 caps which is fine.
Epcos is actually a decent cap supplier, but I think you should do this up right, and order your own caps, as the ones supplied are pretty pedestrian.

Thanks patfont, yes checked the existing one and it is a 10uf 35v one. I find it strange watching out for schematic mistakes, it shouldn't be allowed! :nono:

Not to worry, they seem well documented as you have shown. Many thanks!:smoke:

Ok thats annoying. The only place I can get all those caps listed above by patfont is mouser. All are in stock apart from the 47uf 50v silmic II's. I can only get them in a quantity of 2000. Bugger that!

Cap total £2.67 (without 47uf 50v) :thmbsp:
Delivery £12 :thumbsdn:

OMG! I'm going to bed, getting late here. RANT RANT..:grumpy:

By the way, you can omit C751 all together and solder in a jumper (this signal cap is to block DC, but the preamp stage already has a cap on the output, so its redundant). Generally, for signal caps, in increasing desirability: electrolytic cap < bipolar electrolytic cap < film cap < no cap.

Leestereo, thanks for the info, I guess it's just a fail safe cap, or a generic amp board. Also thanks for the desirerbility list, didn't realise that was the order. :)

If you want to keep the C751 cap, then put in a stacked film 1uF/50V, on Mouser: 505-MKS21.0/63/5 or 667-ECQ-V1H105JL3.
