The Marantz pushbutton on/off switches sometimes fail- does it stay in when pushed?

Yeah, my first thought is the fuse but I have no idea how the power supplies for these units work. Feeling stupid and uneasy about having had it plugged directly into the wall

Did you have a lightning strike or brownout? If it makes you feel any better, most of these are ready for some freshening up anyways.

nah no power surges or irregularities AFAIK
Is there a way I can tell if the fuse is blown? A good supplier for a replacement part?

Visual inspection- there is a fine wire running through the tube- if you can't see it, or it's missing/broken it's blown. It COULD look okay but test bad on an ohm-meter, but usually you can see it. Any Radio Shack or decent hardware store should have the right fuse.
Replace it with the exact type specified on the back of the unit. Don't use a higher value or SLO-BLO fuse unless it is specifically called for on the back of the unit.
If you replace the fuse and it blows again, don't keep trying- you can screw things up. Leave it off and find service or ask questions around here (the Marantz forum will get you the fastest most specific results for this receiver).

I would check the fuse holders for bad contacts or looseness of contacts. I had such problem with fuse holders in a Marantz 2252B.
You should get a DMM and do a usual tests of continuity of the power cord, power switch, primary fuse, primary winding on the transformer, secondary winding, secondary fuses etc.
P.S. Have You checked if the power outlet supplies electricity? :)

thanks a lot man, I'll take a look at the fuse first thing tomorrow, have to be up early, and if it's not the problem i may just take it in to this guy i know - although i don't really like him

Yeah the outlet supplies electricity. Not really familiar with even basic power supply components and testing unfortunately. Is it straightforward?

No. It could also kill you.

You need to read up on some electrical theory before going in. This is dangerous territory.

Yeah I just took out the fuse and the little wire inside looks intact. Anyone else have any ideas? Again, it wasnt bumped or anything of that nature when it turned off, it just shut off for no apparent reason. Thanks guys

It's also possible that a cap in the power supply suddenly dried out and heated up. They are those little can-like things that have a shrink wrap on them and the top is shiny exposed aluminum. The shrink wrap would be grey, black, brown, or maybe even orange. With the unit UNPLUGGED, look under the cover for one that has the most silvery aluminum exposed because the wrap has shrunk down the sides. Caps can hold a charge so don't touch anything!

EDIT: IIRC, the power supply board would be about 3"x 3.5" (Approx) and is directly behind the power switch on the right hand side as you face the unit. Says P800 on it.

Then box it up really well and send it to me. The 2235B is a sweet sounding unit and I really regret selling mine.

if yours has a switched outlet on the back try plugging something into it and see if it switches on when you press the power switch .. if it doesn't try the unswitched outlet .
something like a 60 watt lamp should do for this test . it should say max wattage by the sockets
