Marantz 2245

What is the Marantz 2245 going for lately? I see one on CL for $450. It hasn't been used in years but supposedly played ok the last time it was used. I asked if they could demo it for me, but I didn't get a response.

That's a little high, but not outrageous. This past summer I advised my daughters boyfriend to purchase one he found on eBay.
I think all together, with shipping he had $500 into it. It was in mint condition, and came with a mint factory wood cabinet.
Fortunately, it arrived intact with no damage.

I would insist on a demo. Either through his speakers, or if feasible, your own. They are a very nice unit and worth going after if in good condition. Good luck.

Fair price with the wood case a bit high without. its a great receiver though and my personal favorite. i would make sure its working sitting around unused for years can be bad for the caps

It comes with a case, but it has a big gash in it. Can that be fixed easily with something like wood filler? Link to the posting.

Not really, not with the wood grain. You'd have to re-veneer that side, I would think. The side damage isn't really gonna be visible from the front, though, so it's not a horrible problem. The case is probably worth around $100-150 in that shape. $450 isn't bad, but the whole "I have not used the receiver in years... Price is firm" turns me off. Realistically, this could fire up just fine, or it could need rebuilding, and if it was run for a long time in the case, it may have heat issues from that, and may need a new light housing, all new lights, new power supply caps, possibly more. I would DEFINITELY demo it and make sure it actually works, if you buy it. I personally wouldn't buy it for over $300, assuming it runs. It's entirely possible that you plug it in and it lets out a puff of smoke to the tune of a $100+ repair bill.

If you check eBay completed listings, $450 for this one seems excessive. There have been quite a few that went for much less than that, even with wood cases. If it's not too far for you, I'd show up, take a look, ask for a demo, and offer $300 unless it works perfectly. If you honestly want to pay $450 for a Marantz receiver, you can find a better one in AK's Barter Town.

Thanks for your input. Now the listing was updated to say they connected it to speakers and the left channel is intermittent. It seems like this one might not be worth the effort considering they're firm on the price.

Intermittent left channel is moderately likely to be a dirty pots thing. At this point, I'd make an appointment to take a look, then offer $300-350. Point out some similar eBay listings and go from there.

Could also be a dirty tape mon switch or dirty speaker on off switch. A good cleaning of all switches & pots likely would remedy that. Regardless, he has to get off that firm price.
Realistically, no one is going to pay this premium price.

I sold a 2240B last year for $225. It was worked on by a local tech and put out well over 50 wpc @ 8 ohms. No way I would pay $450 for one that sat for that long.

I missed the part about the wood case. Mine did not have one. They are worth about an extra $100.

Well of course a channel (or both if you test hard enough) will exhibit noise, scratchiness, dropouts, ect, if it's sat for a long time.

I wouldn't offer more than $300-350 and that's if the wood case isn't badly damaged. But the 2245 is a nice unit.

I'm not in a rush, so I'm passing on this one. I'm not going to bother trying to haggle with the seller when it's listed so high and the price is firm.

Probably dirty pots for the intermittent channel. I'd offer less because lots of CL sellers expect a low offer but I would make the offer on the condition that I could hook it up and try it. Good luck. It looks pretty nice.

I just sold one on Clist in very good condition with original wood case with zero work done on the inside for $350.
