Marantz 2270 advice

I'm going to be looking at a Marantz 2270 I found on CL, asking $300. 1970, original owner, an audio "nut".:music: He says it's in terrific shape.

I've read a lot about this unit on the web but I was hoping to hear some AKers' opinions about how this model stacks up against some of the other vintage Marantz I've considered, others in the 22xx and the 23xx series.

2270s, like all vintage stuff, and usually need some "touch up" to work well. Haven't seen one that didn't.

A little cleaning, lamps, voltage settings. alignment, etc.

Afterwards they are pretty solid.

Has this stuff been done to the one your looking to buy?
 
well I bought a Marantz for over 300 on ebay I just wanted one. It is real nice
very clean, well taken care of lights were replaced. I did need to fix the phono amp section though. I like the sound , nice throaty bass nice wood case that seems to raise the price on e-bay.
 
One sold on the Bay 3 days ago for 577$. Other than a wood case nothing special about it. Large clear nice looking pics probably helped.
 
Well one from `70 might really be from 1971, seeing the first year was 71... But if it is a very early one, check if it is a gold/engaved face.... If so buy it and don't look back....especially if it is as clean as the own says.

Well, I bought it. It does has an engraved face but I don't think it's champagne/gold colored. It's silver. Anyway, see my other thread for more info!
 
If it's engraved then it most likely is a champagne finish as they went hand in hand (for the most part). If the serial number is under 5000 then it is pretty much guaranteed to be champagne. Try comparing it to something else that is silver and it may become more prominent. Mine is serial number 1432 which means it was the 432nd made. It's absolutley mint and sounds amazing!! It has it's own unique sound compared to most other Marantz's except maybe the 2245 and 2230. The 2270 defines the warm smoothe tube like sound that people so often claim that every Marantz sounds like (even though a good portion don't).

I disagree with people thinking the price is too high, especially if you compare it to receivers sold right now at around the same price. I had a Harman Kardon HK3480 that retailed in Canada for $650 and my 2270 is far more musical. Less reliable perhaps, due to age, but nevertheless. Also, I think what something is worth is best left up to what the masses are willing to pay for it. I've watched them on eBay for quite some time and the average ranges from $200 - $300 (most unserviced). Depending on how special it is (low serial, champagne), or the extent of the servicing, I've seen them go between $500 - $1000. The 2270 is either your cup of tea or not. One person may think it's worth a dollar and others a thousand. It's all in the ear of the beholder.

Could someone tell me what a 'champagne' finish is? I have a 2270, faceplate is engraved serial no is low 2000. It looks silver but is smooth compared to my other units. Is that what champagne is? Or is it a different color?
 
The 5000 serial number range and under had a champagne or gold tinge to the faceplate. Unless you have something silver to compare it to it may be hard to notice.
