Marantz 2270 Crackling Noise

A few months ago I picked up a cheap Marantz 2270 - it's the model my folks had when I was growing up so I'm very fond of it and it sounded better than I was expecting...but it's starting to show its age (and price). Main issue is a loud, persistent crackling noise from the right channel - happens through a speaker when it's connected to the main or remote right channel as well as through the right channel of a pair of headphones when listening through the headphone jack. Tried the same speaker on the left side and no problems so I know it's not the speaker. The noise starts within 5 seconds or so of turning on the receiver (from any source - fm, phono, aux, etc.) and playing with the volume doesn't affect the noise in any way (continues to crackle away at the same amplitude, even if the volume is turned down all the way). Concerned about my speaker health so I haven't kept the unit on for more than a few seconds with the speakers connected, but I plugged in a pair of cheapo earbuds and kept the unit on for a minute or so and heard crackling through the right channel the entire time. If anyone can point me to a solution I'd really appreciate it! Would love to do the repair myself, but while I know a bit about circuitry and have a soldering iron I'm no expert with receiver guts.

Not knowing your level of expertise, but it sounds like a pre driver transistor in that channel. Not sure if Marantz uses these transistors, but Pioneer and other brands used a 2SA798 pre driver that was problematic. When they become noisy, it comes through the speakers as crackling and popping and the volume and tone controls will have no affect.

You may have better luck if this post is moved to the Marantz forum. The first thing is to use a set of rca cables to connect Right pre-out to Left pre-in, and left to right on the back. If the noise moves to the left speaker it's a preamp issue, if it stays on the right its an amp problem

I’m guessing it’s an amp board transistor. Get some freeze spray and hit them one by one. If it stops crackling or the crackling gets a lot worse then that’s the bad one.

Just received a 2270 with a horrible buzz, found one of the filter caps was shot. Replaced it and back to normal.

Hey Guys and Gals. New to this forum. I have a Denon DRA-800H Receiver. I have 2 pairs of speakers connected to the A speaker connection in Parallel : 1 Pair of Elac 6.2 Reference & 1 Pair of KEF Q350s. I know I am NOT supposed to connect the speakers in parallel..... But I have. These have been playing very nicely together for some months now. THe Denon is connected to other stereo equipment : Tascam CD /Recorder / Player; Tascam Double Cassette Deck , Schiit LOKI [Equalizer] and a Schiit SAGA [Input /Mixer], and a Teac Cassette / CD deck . Suddenly, when turning on the Tascam CD Player / Recorder after the Denon is turned on , and set to CD selection, the Speakers Crackle? If I disconnect one pair of Speakers (which are wired in parallel which is a Audiophile No - No), the crackle stops .... I may have answered my own question, but is this a Denon Receiver Problem ? FYI, I have a IOTA SA# and Emotiva A300 combo , connected to another 2 pairs of Bookshelf speakers : Fluance Signature HiFi Series (to the IOTA , and a pair of Elac Debut 6.2s to the Emotiva. I know the 4 Speakers in a Finished Basement "studio" created during COVID Hibernation in 2020 - 2021, is Overkill for a 450 Sq. ft. room, but I use it to Listen to and Play along to MY Music (a Resurrected Drummer after 50 Year Hiatus at age 69). Here is the curious thing: When I connect the Paralleled Speakers (Elac Reference and KEF Q350s), to the Emotiva A300 Amp, there is no Crackling? Why did I Parallel the Speakers? Because running another pair of Speaker wires to the rear of the room is a PIA .... I will try to String a pair of wires to the KEFs off the Denon , and Connect the speakers to their respective A and B speaker connections separately to the Denon ro see if the Crackling is eliminated. Oh also interesting is that I notice this Crackling only occurs if I turn on the Tascam CD Player / Recorder and the Denon. If I use the other Equipment that Crackling does Not occur? THX , Be well.
