Marantz 2270 engraved face plate update

Hi Dennis,

Yes, the #1366 is the same as the serial number on the tag on the back. The photo is looking straight down at the bottom of the unit with the cover removed.

There are a few more members on this forum who have also attempted to zero in on the engraved/champagne face Marantz receivers. I believe they included all of the 1972 line-up, including some separates like the 1060, etc. I have not heard or seen anything about the bigger amps, like the 250 or the 3300 preamp, but maybe someone else will have some info on that. Ask around...maybe we should start a sticky about this.

FYI, there is a silver engraved unit on eBay right now with the # 5116 so the ending point I always heard of 5,000 may be off. His ad claims 6,000 was the ending point. I'm going to contact him regarding his claim/information. I personally owned a unit just barely over 5000 that was not engraved so it may right around those numbers. I was hoping to get a lot more responses from this forum from 2270 owners. The info I have so far is mostly all my research.

It's certainly possible that the Big Wigs at Superscope made the decision to stop producing the engraved/champagne models at around 5000, and still had a few extra old components laying around that they had to use up. I wouldn't get suspicious about the authenticity of such a unit unless its serial # was greater than 7000. Also, if it's being passed off as an unrestored unit, then of course it would have the gray Elna caps (including the big filter caps) and not the black Nippon Chemi-con caps. Dead giveaway that it's a fake.

I know they're not 2270s, but I thought I'd add to the catalog:
I have a 2245 that has a silver face and engraved with serial #1210.
I also have a 2245 that is not engraved but has the champagne frame inside and black speaker terminals, its serial number is 5511. I'm actually going to sell the non-engraved one and was wondering if there is any extra value to these transition units?

Not in my opinion. It doesn't have some of the improvements that came later. But it's just as valuable as any other non-stamped face plate unit. Clean cosmetics make more of a difference and yours looks pretty good!
