Marantz 2270 recap - Mouser and Digi importable BOMs

Well-Known Member
I found the excellent 2270 Capacitor Parts list, posted by Tom (catrafter).
For my convenience, I converted them into importable
BOMS for both Digikey and Mouser.

I am attaching them, in case it is useful to someone. Please
note that while I made all efforts to check them, before you use them, re-check
the list yourself.

If you find any errors, do let me know so I can correct them.

I already doubled the parts for the P750 Power amps,
so you don't need to do it.
Tom's comment lines have also been retained, so you need to
remove the comment lines (starting with #) before
cutting and pasting into the BOM import tool.

NOTE: AKer Thumper reported that some P200 boards may need an extra
cap 4.7uF 50V . You may want to order a couple extra to be safe (Mouser: 667-EEU-FC1H4R7 , Digikey P10315-ND).

Make sure to check the service manual errata thread. It's a lifesaver.

http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=375907

Summary of 2270 Errata (may be out of date - original source is the thread above)
==================================
2270 SN<3901 Idle current or bias adjust:
Meter set to read DC mV, connect from J753 to J754, set R763 for 5mV

2270 SN>3900 Idle current or bias adjust:
Meter set to read DC mV, connect from J754 to J760, set R763 for 10mV

2270 AM tuner, C183 silk screen is backwards. The + side of the cap goes to chassis ground.
C181 has no polarity silk screen. The + side goes toward the edge of the board.

http://audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=5884199&postcount=37

Polarity of C559 is not marked on the board P550. (The correct polarity is positive faces towards the outside of the board)

Possible misplaced resistor (R612) in the hi-filter circuit diagram.

Marantz advisories for the 2270
========================

M-2270-1 - Replace 2SC984 on the power amp boards (750) at
location H760, with a 2SC496 or similar.

M-2270-2 - Idle current adjustment - for serial numbers 3901 and
above, connect the voltmeter between terminals J754 and J756.
(see the first post in this thread by Jailtime for details)

M-2270-3 - Silk screen missing on 750 board for diff pair H751-752.

M-2270-4 - Relay replacement with an improved twin contact part.
Tom's reco works great - part # MY2-DC24(S) relay (Digikey Z182-ND)

M-2270-5 - Phono preamp transistor 2SC458 (H705, H706) to be
replaced by a 2SC1775A (C, D or E beta range).

M-2270-6 - The service manual schematic has the wrong polarity
for diode H801 on the P800 power supply board.

SM Updates

IIRC, there are a few Service Manual mistakes that have been documented in the various 2270 (and other models) threads.

Some of these have to do with where to measure when setting the bias and channel level to specs, so they're pretty important.

Perhaps some AK'ers who have done this final tuning would be willing to post the corrections for all the Marantz units all in one place (if that hasn't already been done somewhere.)

Thanks Prasad!

ZeroG, the service manual at hifiengine.com has all the service bulletins included.

Cool, thanks. I thought those were tips that came from the extensive experience of the wizardly and wiley veteran techs such as yourself and Echowars.:ntwrthy: Now you've shattered the mystique! Does EW know about that? :D:D

Actually I plan to finish the recap on my 2265 and 2230 sometime this decade, so this is good news.

Speaking of 2270 recap, I'm right in the middle of it with mine. I just found the text file for the Digikey part numbers. So there are three caps in each power amp that need to be replaced, correct?

Folks, I found the first error in the BOMs I posted.
(Tom, pls check your file too).

In the P700 Phono section, Tom recommends replacing the
100uf ,50V cap with a 220/50. The correct digi part # is
P10325-ND (instead of the incorrect P10235-N).
The equivalent Mouser code is 667-EEU-FC1H221 (instead
of the 667-EEU-FC1A392L in the mouser bom posted by me).

Another addition for the phono section -
H707 and H708 can be replaced with 1N4448 and H709, a VD1212, can be replaced with two 1N4448's in series.
Digikey parts for 1N4448 are 568-1361-1-ND or 1N4448CT-ND

I am going to hold off posting corrected versions of the files, so all errors
can be caught and corrected.

What's the reasoning behind replacing transistors in the phono section, (assuming the originals are OK)?

According to many techs with a lot of years of experience, the 2SC458 transistor is one of the most failure prone. They tend to go noisy at some point, so it's just a good practice to get rid of them while you are in there. 2SC2240BL, 2SC1775A are among the many better types that are used as replacements.

Missing from the posted BOMs - replacements for
C416 and C417 (0.47uf, 50V) on the P400 Tone Amp board.
Digikey part P4671-ND (Mouser 667-ECQ-V1H474J) appears to be suitable.

:D

Just doing my little bit for the community. And a big thanks for
all your useful and educative posts, Sir Catrafter.

There's no C416 or 417 on my P400 tone board. I have a P400 right in front of me (see photo).

I also can't find C416 or C417 in the schematic on page 23 of the service manual. 1060's use a very similar tone board which has C416 and 417 of that value.

There are at least three variations of tone amp boards used during the long production run of 2270 receivers. You kinda have to go with the flow when you find stuff that doesn't match the manual.

Tom

I haven't gotten the P400 board out of my 2270 yet, so I am
going by the schematic and also the 2270 threads in this forum.

The schematic here (and also on page 24 of the pdf of
the service manual) shows C416/C417 - coupling caps, in the middle
of the P400 section (close to H405/H406).

But it shows one leg connecting to J456, which isn't on P400. I think C416/C417 might be physically located on P450, the little board that the tone controls are directly connected to. I haven't pulled P450 yet, so I can't be sure.

To replace the 2SC984B (H760) on the P750 Power Amp board,
which would be the better part of the two - MJE243G or 2SD669?
I have both parts and need to make a choice.
I understand both of them need the mica insulation, unlike the original 2SC984.

Read this thread including the excellent explanation by ecluser to learn all about H760 and it's effect on bias.
