Marantz 2285B Owners!

Me, too. I just brought home another tonight! After all, how could anyone have too many of these beauties? :D

My newest has some odd knobs: three original knobs were missing, so someone stuck on vaguely similar replacements from some other gear. :nono: Fortunately, I have a few potential "donor" Marantz recievers which I can cannibalize the correct knobs from, to bring this back to "as-new" shape. I cleaned the paint (Meguire's "Deep Crystal System" Paint Cleaner is wonderful at restoring that crinkly black paint that most cleaners won't work on, as well as the smooth paint on the back panel! Follow it with wax, and the think looks NEW! :yes: :smile:) and faceplate, and waxed the case. No recapping yet; haven't even measured DC offset yet, but all lights work and all functions work well, as-is. [It was being used before I bought it, so I knew it worked.] Now if the prices go up, up, and away, I'm prepared, too! :D

Even if they don't, I might end up selling this soon anyway, as I've found a 4400 (TOTL quad with scope, near-mint in wood case!) that I want a lot more than I want another 2285B. Just can't buy and keep 'em all!

Congrats Arkay! How are the Marantz units you are finding different from U.S. models? Do you have multi-voltage selector, FM de-emphasis setting for U.S. FM, and the Dolby socket? I think overseas models also have a second AUX.

I have a 4400 as well and the 2285B is much nicer to listen to. However, the 4400 is more collectable.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.......... Why not? :D .......... Actually , I find if you restore them your friends become interested , bug you to sell them one cause there like a magnet when on display rocking out at a party or get together , so when you finally do , ya still get to listen to them when ya get together at their place.... :beerchug:......... Got mine yesterday, after staring at it for four months in a pawn shop. Externally, it’s in near pristine condition. All lights and meters function, so I think it’s safe to assume it’s been cracked open recently. I’ll take the cover off later today.
This has been # 1 on my “want list” for the past year. Excited to pair it up with my infinity RS5B’s and HPM 100’s.
 
I'll add to this as well. I absolutely love my 2285B. I've had many of this era Marantz receivers over the past few years, still have a few.. But as of late I find myself using them less and less and they will all eventually find new homes except for just two. The 2285B and 4400. Those are my keepers for life.

I own the 2500, 2330B,2325, 2285B (Black European face plate) and 2270 (Silver and Champagne) engraved face plates. All restored.

I would put the 2330B ahead of the 2285B only because it has more overall power and is just as smooth as the 2285B. The 2285B hands down is the best Marantz receiver in that size. I honestly cant say where the 2500 stacks among my best units. The 2325 is also right up there as well. The 2270 is my least favorite (lower power, usually inferior FM compared to others) of this group but if your a collector is a must. Also, get the 3 piece wood case on any silver faced Marantz. The look better, cool better and not make your units look not so big and bulky.

I just bought a 2285b. But there four holes next to each rubber feet. Does anyone know what is supposed to be in each of these holes?
 
I will chip in as well on our 2285b. Wow it’s absolutely amazing in sound quality and design. With the wooden case it matches well with the Teac a4300 RTR and Fluance turntable. I run it through a pair of Klipsch Forte II speakers and all I can say is WOW.
