Marantz 3600 Restoration

Figured I'd start posting the restorations/rebuilds that I am proud of here. I dont keep much of the equipment I get as I am happy with what I have and dont need a room full of marantz (though I'd like one).

This 3600 came off of ebay, along with a 250M with a destroyed channel for $700 or so. Damn thing was filthy, had sat in a closet for the last 20 years or so.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take pre-restore pictures of the boards. Regardless I'm Really happy with how this one cleaned up.

Well, I guess I waited too long to add the meaty part of this.
This preamplifier was an absolute pleasure to work op. I love that the main PCB is just slotted in and pops right out for easy servicing.
Heres the finished main PCB (excuse my unmade bed in the background, my apartment is only two rooms):

Most of these caps were just what I had on hand. unfortunately I didn't take the best pictures on this one.
Went with a mix of UPW and UKZ capacitors depending on what I had on hand. Swapped out most of the original stacked films for WIMAs, however not all of them due to some of them being in sizes I did not have on hand.
Plenty of room to work with in here so the small value electrolytics became WIMAs. The 1UF films in the phono board were replaced with some CDE orange drops, I dont really believe in the super boutique axial films (hot take I know) so these do just fine, same with the WIMAs, no need to spend $10+ per cap in this preamp.
Cant remember why I went with the UES over in the phono board, I believe it was just a space/on hand part thing, I think I paralleled two 10UF UES lytics to get closer to the specc'd 22UF because I was out of 22UF lytics at the time.
The 10UF axial films were replaced with Vishay AML138 series capacitors.

The front PCB got similar treatment:

If I recall (been a few months since I fixed this guy up) I ran out of the Vishays and switched over to nichicon UFG for the moddle two lytics on this board.

Overall I was really happy with how this one came out, this is a very very nice sounding preamp and also a very easy unit to work on, as long as you're careful not to pull traces since these blue marantz boards really don't like high heat.

If people like these posts I'll keep them up as I've done several different amps/preamps so far.

Just a disclaimer, these are mostly for everyone's enjoyment/amusement (since I probably suck lmao), I really dont intend for these to be guides as I'm mostly just using what I have on hand to get this stuff refurbished.

That might have been a design goal of the blue LED. I have had to remove them from units that are visible. Unfortunate, that is how they are as a Marantz with a different color wouldn't be right.

The original was an incandescent bulb, only replaced it since it was going to burn out eventually, wasn't nearly as aggressive.
 
Looks good! I would probably replace the suppressor capacitors on the rear outlets, too.
The difficult to source TO-66 style RC4194 voltage regulator runs very hot on this and the 3600, the factory left the leads long in an attempt to improve the cooling some.
