Marantz 4400 - What to Expect?

I just picked up a Marantz 4400 receiver with owners manual. It does not have the quad plug-in module but it is otherwise in great shape. I've been playing it in Discrete and 2-channel mode and it has that smooooooth sound we all like.:music:

Question for longtime 4400 owners: What has been your ownership experience and what are your opinions?:scratch2:

Hi there,

you can expect a very big receiver with problems. If it works 100% it would be one of the rarest things on ebay. You need to do work on your power supply.

other then that the 4400 is one of my favorite receivers even the 2500 and 2600 can't take its place.

if you want more pictures just ask :thmbsp:
good luck!!!

Hal: The left channel cuts out but I think that will clear up with a cleaning. In the four channel modes, I can't get the "cross" scope trace as in your picture but I also am hoping that is a cleaning issue as well. The amp runs cool enough...

BTW, mine is the green scope. I understand the later blue scope is rarer.

hey,

No your scope display drive is broken you need to repalce all Fets in the scope drive board. (4x 2sk30) (little heads)
CIMG0053.jpg

this 4400 i repaired for a friend of mine. had a broken scope board.

channel failure is not due to technical failure.
on the back there is a switch for ...remote...main (remote control)
switch it a few times i think your channel will work again.

what to do!.
powersupply:
replace all caps.!
replace the main transistors with more powerfull ones D331-->D313(BD 243C or TIP 4?)
and put the big white resistor 150Ohm 5W above the caps!
100_1157modi.jpg

well the red one need to be replaced NOW! (105 degree versions are better then normal 85degree)
100_1161.jpg

put the resistor above all the caps..

The blue version 4400 is hard to come by.
this version has a modification in it's power supply.
because of this it gets much hotter!

i've had 15 4400's now.. :scratch2: al had to be repaired :thumbsdn:

Nice work Hal!

No, I think my scope works fine. I think the scope's native color is green. The blue color is achieved with the use of a blue film on the lens. Thoughts?

Thanks for the tip on the switch. I'll try that in addition to thoroughly cleaning the switches.

blue-ish scope with a film

No biggie till you restore them

My restored one made a 50 year old "tough guy" tear up when he heard DSOTM in 4 channel, with the lights off, and the blue glow of the 4400.

..And they look oh so good wrapped in wood~

Plus that scope....just :drool::drool::drool:

I added 4 fans to this unit to keep it dead cold and reliable for my brother to use at his house. Two draw air from the power supply, they run at 9 volts vs 12, so they stay silent. The ones on top of the unit (under the grill) are 140 mm fans running at 12 volts. They are the quietest ones I could find, but they only come chromed with blue LEDs. Thankfully the chrome is covered by the grill, and the blue LEDs match the look of this beast.

Here is my build thread.

While i'm a newb at this, i can try to help as much as I can. But for the post part, HAL9000 and jstang are the 4400 prophets on this site. :thmbsp:

sr9000g-one channel is oscillating, resistors needs to be checked on the right side

4400-gave it to my brother :tears:, but hes

240 black- I have two, one works, the other wont click its relays

imperial 9 (how do they sound??) need foam on all 8 drivers

pm 5 94 ... 5 doesnt have a relay click, the 94 seems weak in bass, and needs fans

Sadly, i dont have all my marantz stuff listed, it wont fit anymore!

ooh dear....

that Sd9000 :thumbsdn: trough it away....

Pm5 not easy to fix.

240 can be fixed, watch out for that darlington transistor..
Sr9000, your differential amp is broken, (two transistors)

3800 is a very nice pre amp!!! get that thing working!!!

Pm94.....problem amp.. :thumbsdn:

Ill replace the optocouplers again, its in perfect shape and too weird/rare to toss.
Pm5 not easy to fix.
This thing is built to never be serviced, its low on my fix list
240 can be fixed, watch out for that darlington transistor..
its getting a full restore eventually, seems easy to work on.
Sr9000, your differential amp is broken, (two transistors)
which ones? Nearly all of them have been replaced
3800 is a very nice pre amp!!! get that thing working!!!
the Citation 17 I have works perfect, a 3800 may not be as nice, but we will see
Pm94.....problem amp.. :thumbsdn:
but so pretty

Look on the driverboard Helmut! :D:D

If you need to know were it is mounted give me a holler. ;-)

It's a PNP darlington but i don't know the pos number and have to look it up.

I found one on CL for $50. Guys says i can have it but he has to demo the speakers he's selling. So I say fine. Calls me today and says the guy who wants the speakers wont take them unless he gets the amp to. Turns out the speakers were Bose 901s for $150. Had I known, I would of bought the lot for $200..sold the Bose and kept the reciever...Im going to call him in AM and see if the guy has picked up the package...

what is the purpose of the scope?
power level? tuning level? i don't own a marantz reciever so i'm curious..thanks!
