Marantz 500 NOS Faceplate & Door Received Today!!!!!!

image.jpg image.jpg FedEx just delivered this package and I am excited to get it, a new old stock Marantz Model 500 Faceplate and the little front door. The door is a little less gold than the faceplate, but I am very happy with them. He also included 3 NOS owners manuals, a Marantz 500 service manual and a copy of the Marantz 500 owners manual. It’s a great day!!!!!

Perfect I will order it, the ones I was looking at are $50+.

Do you happen to know the subs for the heat sink compensating diodes? I think they are MZ2361 & SZ51066K, the terminal strip on one heat sink was badly corroded and when I went to replace it, the leads on one side of each diode broke off. I am having trouble finding replacements.

I'd be hard pressed to actually install it. I would install it - but damn, it looks sweet.
 
Maybe stringing together 2 or 3 of the 1N4148 would be the replacement if there is not a direct replacement for the MZ2361 & SZ51066K, I could try to hold them tight to the heat sink somehow I suppose.

You received “a copy of the Marantz 500 owners manual” ? In all my years searching for Marantz 500 unobtainium, I’ve never seen an owners manual. If it does exist, I’d love to see it !

I recently bought a Marantz 500 door on eBay that was described as NOS but I’m skeptical. It looks like it could be an original door but the color of the anodizing doesn’t quite measure up and the mounting posts are longer than the ones on my 9 out of 10 original door which actually does closely match the faceplate color. Height of the posts is critical to proper fitment of the door. I have also purchased the reproduction 500 door sold on eBay which is nice but it also has the wrong sized posts (too long) and anodizing that doesn’t exactly match the original faces. My reproduction door is definitely different than my “NOS” door.

My guess is that all parts for the 500 were produced in a single run as there were only 1000 units produced so parts should be roughly consistent. I’m also not convinced that the anodizing aged in a way that would result in differences in finish (possible). My eBay purchased “NOS” door does not really match my original door in several respects so I’m not confident it’s NOS. I did purchase 2 different sized “NOS Tube Amp Cage Posts” on eBay and was able to closely match the original 500 posts. With the new posts, the “NOS” 500 door is now a little closer to NOS :D

I know it doesn’t matter so I’ll turn it up to concert level and enjoy.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Here it is, I also bought a couple of doors on eBay and one of my 500’s does match one of the doors, the other 2 faceplates are more gold than the doors. I don’t know if the color has changed over the years or if their quality control wasn’t so good 45 years ago.

Have you rebuilt either one of your 500’s or are they original? Seems like there is not much repair information available and finding correct replacement parts is even more difficult, but I will keep plugging along.

Terry, that owners manual is something that I never thought I’d see ! Kind of amazing because at one point I asked Bob Hovland who was the production engineer on the 500 if he knew of the existence of an owners manual and he said he’d never seen one.

One of my 500’s was gone through by Bob and is in excellent condition and mostly original and sounds amazing, the other I just received back from Tom Ishimoto who also worked at Marantz. Tom had the unit for over 4 years and finally got it back to me after bias matching all new output transistors. Bob now has the second one and is putting the final touches on it. I believe that Bob knows more about these units (he packaged the assembly and designed some of the boards) than anyone likely alive save for jstang…

It would be the most awesome gift to AK if you would scan and upload the owners manual :smoke:
