Marantz 5220 Wow and Flutter?

Hi all,I recently had my Marantz 5220 fully revised by a specialist tapedeck tech. I will copy a list of the work done below. However, after the revision there is still audible flutter, particularly when recording, and particularly on things like acoustic guitars and mandolins. In fact it's really no better than before...

Is this just something to be expected with a single motor mid 70's tape deck or is there likely some poorly performing cap in the power supply perhaps?

This was the work done:
- Cleaning the device inside and outside
- Special cleaning of the motors inside, switches and regulators (as required)
- careful cleaning of drive and mechanism, new molybdenum or titanium grease
- new belt / refresh idler rubber & pinch roller n
- Cleaning / demagnetization of the sound heads
- Tape running control and adjustment
- adjustment of belt speed and head gap (azimuth, with oscilloscope after Lissajous)
- Adjustment of all levels according to the Service Manual with professional equipment and tested test cassettes
- Measuring on Maxell XLII chrome band
- necessary repairs after consultation
- final functional check

I had a 5220 that after adding new belts, lube job, cleaning and adjusting, played fine. My son still uses it. And it does have a bit of wow and flutter when recording also. One thing that did help reduce it was to fast forward and rewind the tape before recording. If your using NOS tape give that a try. I still have a 5020 that I use. I kept it over the 5220 due to the 5020 sounding a bit better to me. They weren't the greatest decks made but the do look great. I've had wow and flutter problems with prerecorded tapes I've found over the years and fast forwarding and rewinding them sometimes helps aslo. Maybe a bit sticky from sitting over the years?
