So an update to this for anyone interested:
I took this to a shop - Technetron Electronic Inc in NYC (E31st street) who are also a Marantz Authorized repair shop.
Ended up costing me $453 + tax, with very little detail on exactly what the problem was. They replaced $153 worth of parts (14 dc relays & 2 ac relays - broken/consumed relay contacts, 2 pre-driver transistors - where I would think the problem lies given the balance thing, 4 input power supply caps - due to leakage). This plus $300 labor.
Unit so far sounds good and (assuming all stays good beyond 90 day warranty), I don't feel I could have gotten better replacement amp for my repair money).
I am however no better educated about my equipment or the problem. Technetron's response to any questions end with some variant of "would you rather fix it yourself".
