Marantz tuner - data cell - in Marantz 19

Hi all

does anyone know what kind of component the "data cell" cell in the marantz tuner section of model 19?

Can you post a scan of where you saw that or a reference designator number? I've never heard of that term used in the analog sense.
 
The middle symbol is for a neon bulb I believe. The top and bottom ones ares light dependent resistors. I would have guessed it's for muting but looked at the full schematic and that part is used there as Z501. It is described there as a photocell. I've seen similar devices in Kenwoods from the early seventies that used incandescent bulbs inside. Still the term "data cell" is a bit odd to me for Z601 and Z602 which is in the FM multiplex circuit. Maybe it's the 38kHz chopper? I didn't think neon bulbs were that quick though.

Don't be 'tx'! That's some great info!

The company I'm working for used to use a device that had a photo-resistor and LED potted together to perform level control such as in a voltage controlled attenuator. It was made by a company called Silonex. We had to dump that design when RoHS requirements came along as the cells had cadmium sulfide and cadmium was on the chemical no-no list.

why did they choose that type of component - why was a transistor not good enough?
because of impedance?
 
They had a nice slow switching speed so no popping sounds when activated or deactivated.
