Mark Knopfler's solo work

Jailtime

Standin' on a corner
It seems that everybody on AK is a fan of Dire Straits, how about Mark Knopfler's solo work? I too, am a fan of DS, so when I saw Knopfler's Kill to Get Crimson, I figured I'd give it a shot. Totally different style than DS, but still perfectly recorded, Knopfler's music always sounds great. There's a nice variety of tunes on the album, and most of it shows interesting influences from the British isles. I'm usually more of a rock fan, like Zeppelin, Rush, Hendrix and the like, but the easy going, laid back Kill to Get Crimson hooked me. I'm a big Mark Knopfler fan now, just picked up his Ragpicker's Dream album. Can't wait to give it a listen. :music:

Mark's soundtrack effort on Local Hero is typical and very good. His younger brother David does some pretty good stuff too and his vocals sound very much like Mark's.

I like his solo work even better than Dires Straits. I have Shagri-La, Wag the Dog, CAL, and CD with Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. I listen to them all the time. It's all nice mellow stuff with amazing musicianship and production. The sound quality on his solo stuff it top notch. I think Mark might be an audiophile and keeps a very close ear on the final product of his recordings.

I have Sailing to Philadelphia. "The Last Laugh" with Van Morrison is a beautiful song.

Check out "The Notting Hillbillies - Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time".
Some haunting guitar work by Mark on a song called "Feel Like Going Home" by Charley Rich.

I have "Shangri-La" and "Sailing to Philadelphia" as well. As stated they sound very good and the music is quite enjoyable. I just love his style and versatility.

I've heard other Knopfler stuff and it seems that he cares about the outcome of the final product very much. I mean sound wise and musically. A very talented musician if I do say so.

You might also want a copy of All the Roadrunning with Emmy Lou Harris. It's a very good album.

If I've said it once, I've said it ... well, once or more. If Knopfler's name is on it, I'm buying. Solo work is great. Check out Quality Shoe from Ragpicker's Dream. An absolute stunner in terms of writing.

If you run out of DS and solo stuff, he's done a fair bit of production. Two excellent albums that come to mind are Infidels with Bob Dylan and Land of Dreams with Randy Newman.

Saw him a couple years back so I'll go five stars for live as well. I can't think of any other musician with his skills. Lyrics, music, playing, producing, engineering - that guy is at the top in every catagory.

Mark decided after Dire straits that he just want to do what he likes, so after 1995, 5 solo records came out, which are all 5 stunning. I can recommend "golden heart" for you, it has a lot of Irish influences , which I really like; unfortunately it's only available on cd, -HDCD-, though. Every record of him is a pleasure, he is one of the finest musiscians in the world.

Love all of his solo work. I saw him at Red Rocks last summer. Best concert I've been to. I wish "Sailing to Philadelphia" was on vinyl.
