IMO, way too much $$$.
If he paid over $1000 he got screwed, full retail price was around $800 for the pair. Towards the end of their run they were also apparently aggressively discounted (Back in 2012 NewEgg had a promo code that dropped the price to $240 for a pair, fry's was selling them for $400 per pair, etc.).

You can get "real" Martin Logans for that price. Aerius i, or even the Monoliths on eBay. Pass. Those are nothing special IMO.
