Maybe its my room but i hate my speakers - all of them.

yeah i see the econowave post but to be honest there is way too much info in there. zilch has pointed me there many times - but i am just not smart enough to figure it all out and dechipher all the circular posts. my head swims..... if someone could give me the parts and cabinet dimensions / design to make those jbl's i will send you a case of your favorite beer.

Which? K2-S9800 or the trapezoid monitors I posted at #12 and #15 here?

The connection y'all have not made, and the switch you haven't yet clicked, is that they are in many respects the same speaker. :yes:

I can't believe noone has mentioned Magnepans... they would love your 350 watts, and they are nearly impossible to make distort. You would be running out of the room in pain before you could make them sound bad. It does however depend on the size of the room you are working with. What are the dimensions?

With my McIntosh gear, I have found that if you can load the amp a bit, so it'll operate a little higher up in it's operating curve, it'll sound better. My 7270 and Dahlquist DQ-10's sound wonderful together, whereas my 2600 and DQ-10's don't have quite the same magic. For that reason I would steer away from highly efficient designs like Klipsch. For high volume/sound pressure levels, I'd look at B&W (801, 802, etc.), JBL, Tannoy, Thiel, etc.

The $64 Parts Express trapezoidal enclosure is very close; buy a pair of those and put the 12" woofer of your choice in them along with the high-frequency section described in Post #1 of AK's largest thread.

There have been five or six serious efforts to re-engineer L100s, beginning shortly after they were first introduced. It's debatable whether they "fix" them, or merely turn them into something else, which may or may not be desirable.

For my own part, I submit that they are what they are, fake but fun, and the cost of that particular "upgrade" will go a long way toward acquiring speakers designed from the bottom up that better fulfill its objectives.

Leave 'em be; they stand on their own merits, as is reflected by their resale value.... :yes:

The kit is available from Partsexpress, and that's where I bought it.

The crossovers provide a huge sound improvement. They also increase the value of the L100's for resale.

Zilch may have a point about leaving them as original (if that's what you like), but the crossovers certainly aren't 'fake' -- because I do remember actually buying them and receiving the package, building them, and listening the results. Anytime you modify something you have "merely turned them into something else".
 
well, obviously a personal preference to what will blow you away...how about some
Vandersteen 2c. They go anywhere from #350-$600 for a pair. I just saw a pair on CL which is why they came to mind.
for a totally different experience, a pair of magnepans - but if you like real deep bass, a good sub will be needed, They work for me without a sub, but others prefer a sub.
Used speakers are kind of hard as you normally do not get a chance to hear them before you buy and what may sound awesome to me may not do it for you.

I agree, I don't want to pay that much. But I do think if I could just replace the existing caps with new polyprop versions, the speakers might sound less harsh. This won't help the peakiness or high and low freq roll off, but might sweeten up the sound without otherwise altering the character of the speaker. I had hoped that would be enough to make them fun to listen to with my Mac receivers of the same vintage.

I thought I could just bypass the existing crossover and put in high-pass caps for the midrange and tweeter. I would not have the level controls, but this approach would not physically alter the speakers.

But, I do not know how to remove the tweeter or get at the wires going to the tweeter to wire in the new caps. The tweeters appear to be glued in place and the stock crossover is also not accessible without damaging the appearance of the speaker.

So, until I can figure out how to install these polyprop caps and see if that improves things, they're just used as speaker stands for my Advents.
