Mcintosh Car Audio?

Hi all :)

Am wondering if anyone uses Mcintosh car audio systems?

I just acquired the MSS630 system. Do I only pair it with Mcintosh amps or can I try it with other amps as well? Which amps would you recommend?

Also, what brand of interconnects and speaker cables do you use?

I use Monster M&Z series cables in the car, and the 10-gauge wire from Monster for speakers. 0-gauge power wire for wherever can support it.

Enjoy the 630! You can use whatever amps you want to, but it is doubtful you will find an amp more musical in the car than a Mac. It also depends on space - how much do you have to fit an amp? :)

btw, if i'd like to test and see if the speakers are indeed working, how do i go about doing it without installing it properly into the car first?

Also, any shops in singapore sell used mcintosh car audio products? I'm looking for a used mac power amp to power the mss630s.

Here is my current setup on my 2003 Honda Accord Sedan.

This is the best audio system I have heard in a Honda Accord. Transparency, delicacy, imaging and detail. Prior to buying the McIntosh receiver, I auditioned several receivers from Alpine, Denon and Nac. My speakers are Focal Audio 3-way K2 series and McIntosh 4ch amp (MC-404M). Speaker wires are analysis plus.

Speakers -
Dynaudio MW160 / MD100. Soon to be Dynaudio ESOTAR 2 series.
Velodyne DF12sc. Yep - the worlds only "less than 1 percent distortion" one.

Amps-
McIntosh MC4000M - signal and electronics modified. Makes the stock one sound so - so by comparison.

McIntosh MC440M - also modded the same way.

Soon to add McIntosh MCC301 and will also internally mod out.

Processors (old ones)
McIntosh MEN456 - internally modded - probably the worlds only one done this way. Stock had way too much hiss, and this was on several units.
McIntosh MEQ452 parametric. Also modded.

New processor - Sony XDP4000X - modded. MUCH better than the stock sounding one.

HU -
McIntosh MX406 (old setup)
Sony CDX C90 - modded (new setup)

Interconnects.
Monster M 1500 - a slight step down from their Sigma Retro series.
Monster M950i - for the sub.
Monster XPHP for the speakers.

Yes, it's on clublexus. I wrote the audio book for Lexus way back in 1999/2000. Still the only one out there for these cars.

The mods are for the op amp and buffers. In the case of the MEN456, the op amps as well as the caps were replaced. The stock caps are highly inadequate at filtering out the hiss noise. This was prevalent in all the MEN456 units that I tested. Helped out Peter Lufrano of autophile fame and had a request from Scott Buwalda himself to mod out the equipment.

And this was my setup from TEN years ago.
 
While the car electronics are stellar no doubt, McIntosh definitely has to add some modern conveniences like a USB port, a video out so that video can be fed to a roof mounted screen, mp3 and FLAC support would be required. I am using an LCD based in-car entertainment system. Moving to a Mac would be moving several notches up the sonic ladder but then I loose all those things mentioned above.

Its a Lambda Acoustics 10" sub in a sealed cabinet made by some company I dont remember...its super inert and inside I placed one of them anti-standing wave disks..
 
Great looking setup. A former roommate had one of the 2-channel Butler Tube Drivers, pretty good amp :)

I also run Analysis plus Oval 12 gauge wire... I love it and think there is incredible synergy with McIntosh amps and this wire. incredible dimensionality and image focus and depth as well as percussive attacks being very convincing...hard to beat for the money.

Ok Batman I have not seen that head unit before with the meters on it, whats the model number?
 
Here is my personal feeling about high end audio in a car....unless you sit in the garage with the engine off. This cartoon was from the 70's but still valid today. I'm not saying not to enjoy good sound but I wouldn't go nuts trying to get -105dB S/N

I was once seriously addicted to car audio. I'm out of rehab now and doin' ok. Was using a Clarion deck and the beautiful Phoenix Gold 500.4 amp.

I would agree that great sound can be had with the right gear and quality of install, but I admit to enjoying it most when in the garage with the engine off. I usually preferred to listen to my engine when driving.

I'd love to have some Mac in my car, but I'd probably change my mind for one of the same reasons I got out of it - fear that someone would break into my beloved car just to steal the audio. Sure it can be hidden but then you don't have the pleasure of looking at it, and those meters would be awesome in the dash.
