McIntosh guy buys his first Krell . . .

They also have a frequency response that actually remains flat within the audible range.

I'm trying to understand this statement, so pardon the question.

Comparing the specs of two pieces of the era: The KSA-300S and the MC7300:
Krell:
Freq Resp., 20Hz-20kHz +.01dB / -.1dB
Distortion: ikHz Full Out: .1%, 20kHz Full Out: .3%

McIntosh:
Freq Resp., @ 1W: 20Hz-20kHz +0dB / -.25dB
Distortion: 230mW-300WPC (both channels operating) any power level 20Hz-20kHz: .005%

I'm keeping an open mind, and don't have the commercial-venue experience that you have (and am only interested in home-use applicable performance specs) but am not seeing a huge (perceptible) advantage in the frequency response of the Krell over the same-year McIntosh amplifier. Distortion OTOH, seems substantially higher in the Krell.

Well, I'm gonna keep my eyes open on your thread, and lookig forward to see after some time of listening, how you feel about this foreign strange beast that stepped foot into your home?

I never heard the KSA Models, I've seen them in person though. But have heard the first FPB series.

I'm sure there are people who consider McIntosh amps to be the best sound in the world, just as there are people who think Harley-Davidson motorcycles are the Piece de Resistance of two wheeled transportation.

I actually moved from Krell to Hypex class D, and everyone that's heard the comparison at my place has agreed the Hypex is just another world of transparency, resolution, and musicality.

My C200 preamp.

but isn't that cheating? (: you now need a Krell pre amp. My first Mc piece was a then un refurbished c28, plugged into a very low end onkyo power amp, that was light as a feather, the really bad infinity SM 152's and a sony CDP 990 es CD player, and JUST adding the MC pre greatly influenced the sound and set me on the path that led to what I own now in the sig. to make a true Krell comparison, you have to eliminate the Mc to see which you would truly prefer.....the c200 will inject some Mc sound into the Krell I think.

looking forward to your assessment of the Krell affect on your systems sound nonetheless.....

So what if you end up loving this 'Krell' , are we going to loose you, there is no Krell forum here.
Beware the unintended consequences.

It’s here … and OMG! It’s heavy …

now I have to come up with a game plan to get it out of the packaging …

McIntosh surely doesn't make slouch preamps. I'd suspect the C200 will really shine as a combo with the Krell.

Nope, you didn't buy a lightweight, that's for sure! They sure are beauties, aren't they!?

Krells of this era have a propensity to start looking "purple".

Now I wonder, how much further down the rabbit hole will you go? LOL

Speakers? New Source?

I haven't opened the box yet . . . I know @kevzep would be like . . .dude!

Speakers are either Altec Barcelona or McIntosh XRT22 . . . Sources are an RX-505, TU-9900, RT-909, 5050 B2 II, UDP-205, VPI Avenger, or Pioneer PD-T07 . . .

I may be done . . . lol.

Congratulations! I absolutely loved my old KSA-250. It ran hot as hell though. But it sounded awesome, with bass that was just unreal. Pics when it’s out of the box!
