yep Im considering dropping her off at hawthorne audio in seattle for some help. I would like to tackle this myself, but it comes down to time or money. we will see what they want for $ first.
 
A can of freeze spray would let you isolate a thermally noisy transistor.

Are the local repair people audio people or TV techs? My experience with tv techs are that they do not want to fool around (their words) with the repair/restore this type piece deserves.
 
Hints - Kinks - solutions

I thought about it, hints and kink are problem solutions, preemptive measures, and brainstorms. Problems and ideas for solutions can get long and not resolve into definite solutions without a load of suggestions and possible results, these should be handled in a separate thread with the final result published as a problem and it's fix in the hints and kinks sticky.
 
Here we are several years of icredible listening later....Terry has serviced this wonderful instrument and I love it. New issue has appeared and I'm looking for advice: about 3 out of 10 times (more or less) when I power the unit on, the right channel is very weak, almost dead. If I rotate the RCA plugs (to check for a bad contact) there is no effect. If I unplug the RCA inputs sequentially, ungrounding the second input creates a transitory 60 Hz hum (loud) and the right channel begins working fine. I've replaced the cables and it doesn't make any difference. Any advice?
 
First thing to check on a MC240 is the mode switch, work it a few times to get the self wiping action to clear oxidation off of the contacts.
 
Hi Terry-
I just purchased an MA-6100 with a Phono issue. It seems as if the phono input is being overloaded and causing serious rumble even at low volumes therefore causing the needle to jump out of the grooves and the woofers to pump. I have tried both a MM magnet cartridge and a MC with a transformer both yielding the same results. Any ideas on what could cause this?
 
Double check your grounding, most all TT have a separate ground wire, base and tone arm ground, that should be tied to the 6100 ground post or you will get humm.
 
Mac4300v help????

Hi Guys,
I have a MAC4300V which has 2 issues.
1.) at low audio levels you can hear the audio for either or both channels cut out...or crackle on and off. When I turn up the volume a few pushes on the volume button the problem goes away. It's only at low levels that it occurs.

It does not matter if I am using a remote preamp input of AM/FM...

Could the left/right balance pot be dirty??


2.) I also picked up an HR7 remote(which is supposed to work although the function buttons are in different places), but the MAC4300V does not respond.

Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Common with the 6100, the resistors are dissipating close to their ratings when all is working right, they will eventually cook the terminals, solder, and wires tied to the terminals. Just clean it up, re solder and you will be good for another 30 years.

My MX130's tuner got stuck at 106.7 MHz and will not change to other stations. Power-off and unplug the unit from power source has no effect.

I don't think it's the turner itself because the actual station of 106.7 comes out playing fine. All turner related buttons from the front panel have no effects on the turner. Ie cannot swtich between AM and FM, etc.

I am thinking may be the issue is with the set of switches or the controller of the switches. Is there a fuse for the front panel switch controller for the tuner?

Any idea would be much appreciated.

I'd suggest a hard reset. Procedures should be in the owners manual. You'll lose your configurations, though, so take notes first.

I've gone through the owner's manual, and didn't find any mention of a hard reset. The closest I find is the SYS CAL function. Am I missing reading the manual?

I talked (via email) to Chuck Hinton. He said no such thing as a hard reset. Is there a schematic or service manual for the MX130 somewhere that I can download? Even separate schematic for C39 and MR7083 would be good enough.
 
Have you popped the top (removed the case) and looked at it? Am guessing the tuner is on a single, separate board. If so, may be as simple as unplugging the board and/or connectors and wiping the contacts with Deoxit and plugging back in.
 
I popped it open, disconnected all the cables, and no change. It is still stuck. Would verifying the front panel switch commands are actually get send to the turner be a logical next step in the trouble shooting? Looking at the inside, it is troublesome to get at any board to do some work. Thanks
 
You state that you disonnected all the cables. I'll assume you reconnected before testing. Verifying switch commands seems reasonable. Am afraid you are past my easter-guessing without a schematic, etc. May have to turn it over to the pro's (Terry would be my choice). Good luck.
 
Problem is probably the tuner controller board #047948, about all you can do is make sure the controller is seated well into it's socket, the rest will require test equipment and a set of schematics. The most likely failure would be the remote control micro controller snce all tuner data passes threw it.
