Mcintosh Mr-71-Speaker recommendations

Do you have other sound sources? Do you listen to CDs, streaming or a turntable also?

If you can find an actual hifi store in your town, go there! You aren't going to be able to do serious auditions in a big box store.

I only listen on Stax headphones and I miss my MR-71! Depending on your circumstances, headphones may be the way to go, or at least to start!

There are lots of good affordable headphones and amps. Enjoy that McIntosh!

I have a McIntosh MC 2600 Amp, and a c33 or c34 preamp. I also have two Technics turntables, MK 1200 5D, and SL10 with 310 mm cartridge. The turntables and YouTube are outstanding in sound. They feed into AR 3's, HPM 100-200 watt version and double woofer KDS speakers. The sound is outstanding. The MCINTOSH MC 2600 has .005% harmonic distortion or less.

Try putting another source in place of the MR 71, leaving EVERYTHING else the same -- same connecting cables, same input on your preamp, same power outlet. Before going to too much trouble, make sure the problem is not downstream. I would use a CD or tape player, but your phone will do if you can connect it. A turntable playing into your tuner input won't be a good test.

If the other source sounds bad, the tuner is not the problem.

Also, is the MR 71 getting the same antenna signal that gives good results with your receiver? If not, try that actual antenna signal. A bad splitter or antenna cabling could cause one to fail but not the other.

If you're getting good sound from other sources but not the tuner, service is indicated. Tuners have a lot of internal adjustments that can drift over time, and that tuner was made 1969 or earlier.

The tuner is probably fixable and well worth the investment - it's a classic.

I have the tuner running through a c34v currently, as I have my Technics going through C34v also. Everything sounds incredibly good, excellent, like nothing I've ever heard before.

The tuner puts out volumes of sound, but it doesn't sound crisp. It sounds distorted, flat. It gets a great signal with 300 mgh antenna, but the sound lacks detail. It's flat, with no depth. I was expecting something better than my sansui G901, but the sansui blows it away. My Akai 1150 blows it away, as does the Marantz 2238b. Maybe I'm expecting too much or this thing needs recapped. Its beautiful, wood cabinet and all, but the sound doesn't match its beauty.

McIntosh MR71, 1963 to 1969. So at best, 55 years old tuner. What service has it had?

You most likely don't have a capacitor issue so much as you have an alignment issue - particularly the IF and discriminator.
