I for some reason missed the replaced main filter caps in the 2105 photo. The blue caps are not original (original had clear wrap = silver, not blue) so it is possible (probable?) that someone has already tended to the SB and properly restored the 2105. Easily worth $200+ in parts if done correctly. The other can cap (multi-cap) below the chassis might be replaced with discreet caps or a reproduction multi-cap (either one works and the value is unaffected). If the driver boards are also updated as should be the case, this one is ready to rock and probably worth $1k as-is (provided the glass and chrome are in good to VG condition).

Apparently, someone thinks it's worth at least $1500. I'll let this one ride for now, see if it stays listed.

$1500 would be pretty much top end for 2105, but I've seen it go for even higher. Considering it being a local sale, you'd expect 20-30% less from the ebay price, but then there's also a McIntosh premium as well. So, according to the way the seller is piece pricing them, the speakers went for $100, pre $400?
Anyways, I'd walk away if the seller is playing the game of "I have someone with an offer, can you top that?".

@gogofast C28 apparently is still available for $400 I guess. If you'll pay $1500 for the 2105 wouldn't you throw in $400 for the pre just to have it??
@62caddy Yes, why hasn't seller just sold it to someone making a $1500 offer? Some of these CL sellers seem to enjoy playing games and it's hard to tell what the real story is.

And that is why I refuse to make playing that game any easier by simply withdrawing from it altogether.
If the money on the table isn't agreed to at the time the offer is made, I'm out.

I would just tell him the price you’re willing to pay for either or both and tell him to let him know if he’s ever willing to sell for that price, you’d be interested and would like to check them out.
Cuts to the chase, makes it less of a negotiation or confrontation, and lets him save face if his story is BS. He can make up another story if he wants later on why he decided to accept your price, but all you care about is getting good gear for a fair price.
I have a 2105, late S/N with the late driver boards, new / perfect McIntosh glass, SBs completed, completely restored with flawless wood case and IF I were selling it I wouldn't expect much (if anything) over $1,500 current value. Maybe a little more, but that would probably be eBay where fees and frustration would net me less than $1500 (don't ask, no interest in selling). I think that's pretty much the top of the market but maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt that you can break $1,500 net for one without the cabinet and in imperfect condition.
Similarly with condition, if the faceplate is excellent and there's nothing more than very light rust at the bends, I would probably jump on that for 4 Benjamins. The volume pot would have to be good and track well, complete, and functioning with only the 60Hz hum presumed to be either power caps or the typical grounding issue. He's not in a good selling position with it needing work and unless you're a decent Tech, you're probably not in the best buying position (having it professionally restored will be expensive as it's time-consuming). The C28 isn't the most valuable and it has no cabinet, but it's a pretty good piece worth (guessing here) around $700 in working condition.
Cabinets are somewhat important to collectors of this era's McIntosh gear, but can be found.

@SaturationPt If nothing else, this thread has taught me much more about Mc. equipment than I knew before. With all the experienced responses I have a little better grasp on what to keep my eyes open for and what value these items actually have. Do really appreciate and like the wood cabinets on the Mc’s and Marantz gear. My tastes have changed with age and the more sterile, contemporary look of my Carver gear is still a great look but I do find myself attracted to anything with a nice finished cabinet. (Hope my wife doesn’t read this)

The blue meters are also fun. I know they don’t add anything to the sound vs the equivalent non metered version, so you have to decide how much of a premium that’s worth to you.
I had/have a 2120, which sounds great, but is not fancy looking - more industrial. It semi-bummed me out to see it there in my main system even though it sounded great. I ended up getting a higher powered metered Mac amp and even though it was a lot more, I enjoy looking at it every time I use my system. So it was worth it to me.
But not everyone is so superficial
, so if it doesn’t matter to you, be on the lookout for non-metered equivalents. Great bang for buck.

Funny that McIntosh and Marantz both offered their equipment in this era without the cabinets (or with the cabinets as an additional-cost accessory). My Father bought a Sansui 5000 new in Japan, the cabinet was optional on it also but almost every 5000 series I see is wearing the cabinet. The McIntosh seem to be around 50%, and the Marantz probably closer to 20%. The competitors such as Pioneer came with wood or wood-look cabinets included, not sure how that impacted sales numbers through the years.
I only had a cabinet on one of the (8 or 9?) Marantz receivers I've owned, all of my McIntosh I bought with cabinets (except tube amps of course). I like the wood cabinets!

Agree on meters, but for me it defined McIntosh as they entered the Solid-State era, the high-end ones had meters and wood. Love the dancing blue meters.
