McIntosh & VOTT

I know, I know, you're going to want details and I don't have them right now but here's what's going on. I saw an ad today on CL for a cabinet I've been looking for with a swivel top for my tv in the bedroom. There was no phone number so I responded to the ad with my phone number. The guy called me in a few minutes and I went over to buy the cabinet. In talking with him it turns out he has a McIntosh tube amplifier and a McIntosh solid state tuner and some Altec VOTT speakers he hasn't used in years and his wife wants him to get rid of them. I told him I was very interested and to decide if he's going to sell them and for how much. He said they were not the large VOTTs but the smaller ones. I don't have any info on model numbers on the equipment or the speakers. In researching VOTT speakers it turns out there are a lot of them. Given his statement they are 20 or 30 years old and not the big ones, does anyone have an idea what they may be? I don't have his phone number and thought it might be a little eager looking to camp out in his driveway until he contacts me (he has my phone number). I'm not too familiar with McIntosh stuff other than to know it has a loyal following. Are their early solid state tuners as good as their tube type models?

You really should just go camp in his neighbors driveway, that way you don't look too eager :D No seriously, keep on it and keep us posted as to the results of this one :thmbsp:

It's not 5PM here yet. He told me he's retired but his wife still works (God loves women who take care of their men like that). I'm hoping once she gets home and they talk it over he'll call me. The only thing I'm afraid of is that he might have the idea his stuff is worth more than it is. I won't know that until I find out how much he's asking and just what it is. I think if it's just a few hundred bucks or so I'll just buy it and worry about it later. If he wants some serious cash then I'll have to come here to AK and do some research and maybe get some opinions.

I'd stop by the bank and pull some savings on the way to the guys place.. So long as the price isn't really crazy, you may be worth while plopping down quite a few hundred depending on what he has...

Mac tubes.. Depending, could be well over $1000 worth of equipment.. If they are valencia's, they can sell for 6 or 700... so you could do well paying even $500 or more for it all.. just lots of depending.

Don't pass on a deal if its going to run you over a "few hundred". You would be positively stealing them for that kind of money. I would go into this anticipating that 1500.00 would be something I'd probably jump at. It would be a deal for you, and well under what just about any combo of mctubage and altecs would be worth.

I agree. Be prepard to take this system home. Since he owns McIntosh and Altec, he is not likely to sell it at Sound Design prices. Carry $1500 with you. If it can be purchased for less, fantastic.

Like the other boys said -- bring cash up to what you are able to spend. McTuners are desirable and pricey, likewise the amp. No mention of a preamp? Could be a Mac pre/tuner. Likewise on the speaks -- probably a valancia/flamenco kinda thing, and worth buying (I have a pair of each :D ).

Good luck -- sounds like you've stumbled onto a killer vintage system. :thmbsp:

+1 on the Mac tube amp(s ?) It depends on which model they are. You dident happen to notice a number on the side of the amp(s)?
No, I've never even seen the equipment. I was talking to him in his driveway when the subject came up. He hasn't called me back either. I'll give him a couple of days and go over to his house.

That's a mighty nice AK offering, rjohn. :thmbsp: That being said, if you get the gear and hook it up, I'll bet you won't part with it! :D Besides, you never know what the asking price might be. :)

rjohn, this sounds like stuff that would be your system for life. Seriously!!!

My system consists of a pair of McIntosh mono tube amps and a pair of Altec Model 17s. I don't look to upgrade. Seriously!!!

I think it's time to pay him a visit.
Remember, he may very well have lost your phone number and is hoping that you'll come back.

If he consulted with his wife, my money says that they're for sale, WAF trumps all.
