Mercury poisoning from rectifier tubes lawsuit

Just the other night I saw the show, "How It's Made", and they showed neon sign manufactures putting a drop of mercury in each of their creations. What about them? :scratch2:

G'day all, an interesting but rather unfortunate situation rather symptomatic of these litigious 'times'.

Yes mercury is toxic stuff. Anybody heard about the unfortunate story about Sir Isaac Newton as his rather dangerous 'alchemy' experiments! Admittedly, large large quantities of mercury and other toxic heavy metals were involved, but yes mercury is rather nasty stuff, one of many quite dangerous materials used commonly in all manner of common products.

I'm waiting for someone to start a lawsuit about 'ionisation' type smoke alarms ultilising a radioactive source, if there hasn't been already one started! Regards, Felix aka catman.

Mercury pollution is sourced by coal burning plants such as those in Western Pennsylvania. This is recognized by the Allegheny County Health Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Many fish, including tuna contain enough mercury to require warnings limiting consumption. Mercury is found in the air near dumps and mines also. The plaintiff has the burden to show that he never breathed air in Pennsylvania nor ate any food containing mercury nor was ever near batteries, thermometers, thermostats, or other products that contain and/or contained and/or blah, blah, blah....

I recall that one way to handle nuclear wastes uses a glass matrix to trap the radioactive products. With vacuum tubes still operating 50 years after manufacture, it is clear that their vacuums are intact and any nasties still inside.

Pick one, call a lawyer and go for it. :thmbsp:

Good luck

Check this out. Some of his own words might torpedo his suit:

Their diagnosis: Lead poisoning.

They said to avoid Lead and all would be well, but all was not well, and never was again. Three days later while at my family doctor, an episode occured again in his office. This resulted in another ambulance trip.

This time, extensive testing was done. All was normal, including heavy metal testing for Lead, Mercury, Thallium, Arsenic, Cadmium, and Chromium. Heavy Metals were not the cause for this problem. I then stabilized and was released, feeling worse than ever.

It also seems that at one point he thought he had Lyme disease, although his doctors disagreed: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=246433

There are other posts there dating back to when he was 21 years old. Make what you will of it...:smoke:

NICE sluthing work.. any attorney defending against this guy should be able to toss something like those posts back to the court, and the court could see there's no proof of mercury.. but then again, a lot of those companies can't afford a good lawyer..

Sounds to me like this guy is just another scumbag looking to make enough money from who ever he can to fund all of his medical bills even if they had nothing to do with his medical problems.

And he has the brass to call himself "RCA 7591". Man how I wish I had a law degree...I'd be more than happy to handle this one "pro bono". Slam-dunk...see ya, pesky, misguided idiot.

And...including 6BQ5s in the list of hazardous items would be one point I'd attack with unbridled ferocity. Shows that the suit is specious and without merit. Idiot.

Resin, wheat flour, wax, wood fiber...are those things really to be found in a vacuum tube?

This whole thing seems like a pretty low thing to do, a real cheap shot. Unless you break a tube open, how is that mercury ever going to get out? And even if it did...would there be any more than trace amounts in there?

Most of us have a mouth full of fillings leeching mercury into our bodies at much higher levels then I would bet you'd ever get out of a vacuum tube. A silly nuisance suit is what I think of this.

That's not entirely true. The mercury in the fillings in your mouth is chemically bonded to the other metals in the filling and won't leach out. On the other hand, you do get small amounts of mercury and other metals as the fillings (very, very, very) slowly wear down.

Andy:
If the tube holds a vacuum, i.e. air can't get in, how does the mercury get out??
I'd love to see him prove #35 that he has not been exposed to mercury from ANY other source.
Douche bags like this putz need some lead poisoning.....

Are ya sure you didn't mean that he should get his just desserts with mercury poisoning? :thmbsp: Lead might be too 'mild'... just sayin

...And elsewhere, via derekva:

OK, so maybe that's not entirely true-then it's also not entirely false either. I doubt "Bigerik" was implying the fillings are 'pure' mercury, so that is not the issue. There are varying degrees of serious repercussions from the mercury in fillings from what I've noted in recent scientific research. Some individuals have extreme reactions to mercury, as in mercury poisoning effects from fillings. Does that apply here? Yes, of course it does; alloys or not, so if I were to speculate, this might be what "Bigerik" was indicating.

Check around today and see if any competent dentist is still using any form of mercury for fillings. All the dentists I know have very, very quietly switched to something else, such as an epoxy-based or similar polymer-type resin material that is entirely mercury-free and probably metal-free, too.

BTW, mercury used for fillings recently was first, entirely banned in a European country (I think it was maybe Sweden? Switzerland? One of those "Sw" countries.)

As a chemist I need to clear up some of the misinformation on this thread regarding mercury. Just to clarify, by far the most toxic forms of mercury are the organometallic versions, i.e. mercury bound in a carbon-containing molecule, such as methyl mercury, dimethyl mercury, ethyl mercury, etc. These organometallic compounds can be synthesized by humans or formed naturally from inorganic mercury via the action of anaerobic organisms. A small amount of dimethyl mercury will kill you dead as a stone, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it except wait for the end once the exposure occurs. These compounds also bioaccumulate over time in your body, so once they get in they stay in.

On a lighter note, elemental mercury is much less toxic than dimethyl mercury, but don't eat it. I spent years in a lab running tests on solids content of fats that used mercury as an indicator in the heated dilatometer tube, and none of us seems to be any worse for the wear - we have since converted to colored fluids to replace the mercury.

Yeah, if you are going to go into business even if it is a hobby you have to allow for contingencies like this arbitrary and capricious lawsuit. You have to have some safety cheddar to pay for things like this and then countersue to potentially recover lost revenue if it cost you too much. It is part of running a business here and if you can't afford to pay you won't be able to play.

Look at all those defendants! He's obviously casting a pretty wide net in the hopes that he'll catch one of those fish. This whole thing seems like frivolous litigation
