Troubled soul/creative artist? Somehow I've heard this equation before.....Jackson electrifyied the crowd with song and dance. One of a kind.

What are you referring to? The half-speed master? If that is the case, I would have to say that it is well worth it. I have yet to buy a HSM that doesn't sound better than a standard pressing. More quality control goes into making a half-speed, and the lifespan/durability is more than 3 times that of a standard record. I stopped buying standard records after I heard "Dark Side of the Moon" from Pink Floyd (also a HSM), released by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. It was a gift from my father, and is by far one of the best ones that I have ever received.

PS-Wait a while before you run out and buy one, the demand will go down.

Not sure what speed it was mastered in. Dont know where to look for that info. I was lucky to find it in the condition it is in. Missing just the plastic covering on the album . How do we know what mastering process was used on any particular album any way?

Here is a picture with the half-speed mastered logos from CBS. Also, is says "HALF-SPEED MASTERED" on the record label (the one one the actual lp). You can't miss it.

I agree.. I think Off the Wall is much better.

I will admit Im biased I guess. I grew up watching & listening to the Jackson 5 (cartoons even), and was at just the right age when 'Off The Wall' came out. It was a special time in my life. To this day, listening to 'Rock With You' is like a musical passport to my teenage years. That music just flowed......

Watch out, those half-speeds are going for an arm and a leg. I would wait a while before I get one....I don't honestly think that one that has been played a few times is worth 100 bucks. I got my copy unopened two years ago for 15 bucks. The Pink Floyd album was the gift, just for the record.

People here in New Zealand are in shock too. Some of my work colleagues started getting text messages around 10am our time, today, from family or friends who'd heard the news. I'm not a fan but it's still a bummer. R.I.P.

RIP, Michael! He is still one of my favorite radio artists.

The Jackson house in Encino is near where I live. The TV helicopters are hovering over my house, the vultures.

Got to admit MJ was a tremendous artist that unfortunately got done in by his own success.Kind of like Elvis. Was never a big fan but do have"Thriller" and "Off the Wall" on vinyl and will be spinning in his memory tonight. The opening bass lines on "Smooth Criminal" are awesome.RIP MJ

In 1983 I worked for a pro sound company in my dream job at the time. I installed and set up several PA systems in clubs. Racks and racks of UREI & BGW amplifiers pounding away on JBL cabinets. Thriller was in every club and it sounded awesome.

I try to find the positive things in people. When I think of MJ I'll remember how much fun it was listening to his music on those great systems.

While the Japanese 1st pressing CD sounds good, the definitive digital version of "Thriller" is the SACD....

Thanks for the music, MJ. RIP.

Michael was a living legend and now the legend is gone forever.

He made some great music. He is a modern day Elvis but more.

R.I.P Michael

RIP, Michael Jackson.

I HATED his squeaky voice as part of the Jackson Five, as a kid. Never could understand the appeal, at all.

Then he matured into a great performer, from the dance moves to the music, until at his peak when topping the charts and the grammies (around the time of Thriller, the biggest-selling record in history), he deserved the moniker of "The King of Pop".

Musically, he didn't really evolve past his peak. I think it all went downhill from there. We began to learn about the price he had paid psychologically for that early childhood success and the pressures that were put on him at far too early an age. He went too far into plastic surgery, trying to become a "white Diana Ross", until his face looked positively abnormal. Accusations of child molestation, admissions of sleeping with young boys (at least, literally). The --apparently sham-- marriage to Lisa Marie Presley. The bizarre act of dangling his adopted child off the balcony of a hotel. It seemed he couldn't escape negative publicity about mental abberations.

From a man envied for the wealth that could buy him his own private amusement park, to a man derided for a sick fixation on his appearance, childhood and little-boy-dom. From one of the world's richest performers, to a huge debtor. Ah, how the once mighty had fallen!

Over time, the negative news just piled up and swamped everything else, in many peoples' minds. None of us can fully understand what must have gone on in Michael Jackson's mind as he went through all of this; what it must have been like to BE Michael Jackson. Perhaps the stresses of it all (the debts, the lawsuits, etc...) affected his health and contributed to his death at only 50 years of age.

I have no malice, nor any envy, for the guy. For his sake, I hope he has finally found some peace. RIP, Michael Jackson.

Too bad he'll be remembered not only for some great music, but for personal flaws, perhaps best exemplified by the attached pics.

The man sold more records than god and changed the face of music and dance forever. It's sad to see that the majority of this thread is comments about his personal life...or should I say personal demons?

Micheal Jackson wasn't the first person to take the power of great wealth and destroy himself with it...and unfortunately, won't be the last.

RIP Micheal. You have brought great joy to many!

Since I was born in 1976, both Off The Wall and Thriller were both very popular during my earliest recollections of music on the radio (along with Prince's 1999) so those albums have a special meaning to me. That is really what I think of when I think of Michael Jackson. RIP
