Listening to NPR this morning and heard a story about this: http://ritland-concert-photos.com/Who/who.html

I'm sure any rock fan who graduated from SMS knows all about this, but I'd never heard of it. Granted, it was a few months after the appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival and their popularity was just beginning to skyrocket, but I still find it incredible.

Oh, and they were the opening act for the... (OK, read the article for yourself). :)

Pretty cool. The Buckinghams were a BIG deal in 1967 and early 1968. Only the Beatles and Supremes sold more records if I remember correctly.
 
Back in "67 The Who played up here in a very small club, (pre Monterey) the Grimm Reapers opened for them. OK since you asked, the Grimm Reapers was a band a very young Rick Nielsen, (of Cheap Trick) formed. They were also to open for Otis Redding in Madison, but Otis lost his life in a plane crash.
 
Wonder if someone in the AV club recorded it? If it's sitting in a box in somebody's attic.
 
That would have been awesome to see them in high school looking just like the rest of the crowd.

Notice in the first pic the way Roger is standing. Ouch!
 
Interesting the way the Buckinghams were the lead in that story. It makes one wonder how different things might have been. :scratch2:

Yeah a buddy of mine has been swearing that he saw the who at a high school dance when he was a kid.I guess I'll have to believe him now.
Damn that was a strange time. I don't think Johnson county was even that populated in '67' any way not like it is now.Eric

I saw a drum clinic from Danny Carey of Tool at SMS a few years back.

I went to East - the original "Shawnee Mission High School."
 
The Who is near the top of my list of favorite's, but I never saw them live. Was always out of town or pre-disposed in some way. Bummer...
 
wow who knew? I do remember Frank Zappa played in someones garage off 87th st and Blue-ridge when Joes Garage was just released.
 
We have a local legend around here that on January 20, 1969 at the Wheaton Youth Center on Georgia Avenue, there was a new combo from England by the name of The Led Zeppelin that played its first-ever gig in the Washington area.

Cannot be confirmed...

Well I've seen The 'Oo a bunch of times, but @ a HS gymnasium and opening for Chicago's The Buckinghams (who were quite talented, btw)? That would have been a priceless experience. Speaking of experience, i wonder if Hendrix ever played @ a HS in the states b4 his Big Trip To The UK w/ Chas?
 
Some time around then my younger sister won two tickets to Herman's Hermits and my mother insisted that I take her. I was pissed, because at 15 I was way too cool for HH. The opener was The Who and it pretty much freaked out the mothers and daughters that made up the bulk of the audience. It was fantastic. I just looked it up - September 3, 1967.

Saw the Who at Merriweather Post Pavilion (MPP) in the summer of 1970 - it was Mobbed!
Sadly, I was too young to catch any of the earlier shows at MPP -
the big shows there were The Doors in 1968 and Joplin in '69!
