The Who concert I attended in the '90s apparently had a low production budget, however, they used an effect that I've never seen anywhere else.
On each side of the stage were large canvas murals about 40 feet square. The murals were comprised of scrolls with a width of about 5 feet each.
During the first image change, the scrolls all ran at the same, one picture went up and another replaced it. I thought 'how cheesy'. Then they ran the scrolls in sequence, with the new image emerging gradually, left to right. The scrolls then ran like every other one, with the image being transformed in truely interesting ways.
The scroll rolls must have been quite large in diameter.
