Mission 770 Speakers

I'm starting to keep my eyes peeled for a nice pair of Mission speakers. The 770 is probably what I'm after. I don't know that these come available that often. There is a pair on CL in Seattle 2,500 miles away. Sigh.

OK so the pair in Seattle raises a question. Which model 770 is the one for me? The original 1981-1983 or 'Freedom' 1984-1985. There may be iterations within these date ranges I don't know.

Recommendations please?

The ones in Seattle are 'Freedom' models (hammered-metal-look baffles). As far as looks I think I prefer the originals.

Right this minute I am listening to Polk Monitor 7B's -- which I think are fantastic -- to give you an idea of my tastes.

I've never heard the "Freedom" models, but the originals with the white baffle and clear poly woofer cones are very fine sounding speakers.

Definitely understand your desire for Missions- I have a pair of 707’s from the mid 80’s. Still love their sound. Also have a set of Volare series in my HT setup. Sorry I don’t have much to offer, but wish you best of luck in your search-

Nice ... so that's the mk2 iteration ... and look at those crossovers! Look at those inductors ... and the glue or epoxy or whatever that is.

If you have a minute to come back on a couple of questions.

a) Was the rectangle two capacitors encased side-by-side in that stuff? Wow what fun.

b) Can you tell what material is that larger circumference inductor wound around? Fascinating.

Be sure to check the surrounds on the 707’s. They do rot out. The original foam surround was behind the cone. You can buy reform kits online. You need to remove the dustcaps and shim the voicecoil to do it correctly. You will have to cut out the original dust cap and install a new larger one. Your new surround will be on top of the cone. Not sure how you could ever do it from behind with the frame in the way. Works fine on top. I will post some pics of my 707’s later if you’d like to see them. They have an upgraded woofer compared to the 700’s.
 
Ye the glue is a problem it's a bleeder to get off and it's on everything.
The big inducted has an iron core.
Apart from the recap iv left them as standerd as possible.
 
Did my 707 surrounds a while back. I decidea to go onto the front of the cone as stated above. Depending on the actual surround chosen it is possible to attach to the back side but quite a bit more tricky. Shimming is not entirely necessary, a tone worked fine for me.
 
Left a pair at the recyclers today, rain destroyed them. Lovely speakers though, had 3 pairs in the past. The Seas tweeters are smooth.
 
Mission's are nice speakers. Have a pair of 737r's. Had to recap the speakers.

Your welcome. The caps in the crossovers had aged badly. High ESR. Replacing the caps brought back the tweeters.

Very good information; glad you added!

...the sum of in-phase AC resistance. It includes resistance of the dielectric, plate material, electrolytic solution, and terminal leads at a particular frequency. ESR acts like a resistor in series with a capacitor (thus the name Equivalent Series Resistance)
 
The measured capacitance of the caps were almost 1/2 to 2 times the nominal 4.7mfd. Spencer time to get to sleep. Goodnight. The electrolytic caps don't age well at all. Replaced with Dayton film caps from Parts Express.
 
Good to know. Often wonder about speaker crossover deterioration rates and recap merits. Like these Polk 7Bs I'm listening to right this minute. They sound so good. Well it's often worth checking out what it going on inside your cabinets, I suppose, especially if 30-40 years old. I love Dayton Audio / Parts Express. Well I guess it IS after midnight EST here so I guess it IS time to turn in. Thanks all ! ! !
