I bought a pair of beat up mission argonauts and one of the tweeters ended up being blown/shorted. I want to find a replacement that is most cost effective as i have a limited budget and already have enough speakers so if it gets too expensive, i’ll get rid of them one way or another. Any help or guidance is appreciated, is this worth the search for a new tweeter(s) or should i just try to resell and get my money back?

Back in the day when these were first introduced,the Argonauts were speakers that many of us could only dream about.
These were truly LOUDspeakers; very sensitive and dynamic,and if you appreciated tight deep bass with great definition,these were heavenly.The mids were also pretty damned good too.Unfortunately,the tweeters had all of the appeal of a dentists drill boring right into your eardrum.In your face doesn't even begin to describe it....Bloody nasty sounding critters.
Personally,I would be very inclined towards bringing a pair of these back to life.Just with a nicer tweeter this time around

I would want to save these but the only thing holding me back is the task of finding a tweeter that fits. I saw an old thread where someone else tried to find a replacement tweeter and was having an extremely difficult time finding a match (i dont believe they ever actually found one), which is why im hesitant as to how to continue with these.Back in the day when these were first introduced,the Argonauts were speakers that many of us could only dream about.

My favorite "budget replacement tweeter", which sounds very good, very sensitive, not expensive, is the Vifa (now
Peerless by Tymphany) BC25SC06-04 1" Textile Dome Tweeter (no affiliation). I think with some little work to adapt a faceplate they could fit your speakers.
I'm using them right now to fix a pair of JBL CF80, and used them in several repairs when finding the original tweeter is not possible or too expensive. Every customer was surprised and happy to spend just a few $$ to get that sound.
You usually need to tweak the crossover, most of the times adding some attenuation (they sound quite loud) and modifying the capacitor to get the desired crossover point.

Agreed,that is an excellent tweeter,and not a lot of $ either.
Keep in mind,most tweeter drivers are round and use three or four machine screws (which usually seem to respect a standard spacing/pattern) to mount them to a face plate.Nothing stopping you from removing them from the face plate they came with and making other arrangements. Here is one of my own favorites,and you can see how the driver is attached:

I actually happen to have a vifa tweeter (d25ag-46) with the metal dome version of that and it does fit. Now question is, how much will it affect the sound until i get 2 new replacement voice coils( i would want to get the pair just in case it’s not exactly to spec as the original)? I want to run these now just to see if i really do want to make the space to keep them but i want to know what to expect so I don’t blame it on the speakers themselves i blame it on the different voice coils
I gave it a test, both measure the same impedance but the sound is extremely different. The vifa coil is much more smooth and balanced, i never actually noticed how shrill the mission tweeter was until i compared it to the vifa side by side. I had to tape a piece of cloth on top of the mission tweeter in order to hear both at the same time without feeling too much discomfort about the differences while listening . It should work until the new tweeters get here.

- The waveguide does separate from the tweeter. There are several clips that hold everything together, it’ll take a bit of work but eventually you’ll be able to pry it loose. To put it back together i used the help of a small rubber mallet after trying to push it back in myself to no avail.
- My tweeters were soldered in so before pulling off the clips make sure you have a soldering iron ready so you don’t cause any unnecessary damage
- My vifa tweeter had 3 machine screws holding the coil in place and it did fit perfectly into the tweeter so i would look for something with 3 machine screws in order to find something that will fit. The voice coil will look like the one provided in the link Tony provided(thank you by the way)
- I would suggest finding a match for your working tweeters or better yet just buy a pair and switch both out(make sure it’s close to spec with the originals so you don’t have to go through the hassle of messing with the crossover.
- You have pretty much 3 options when replacing a tweeter, all three are mentioned above but i’ll give a quick summary.
- Buy a replacement voice coil that is to spec with the original
- Buy a tweeter of your choice and adapt it to the hole using wood spacers or something without the waveguide
- Buy a tweeter that has 3 machine screws holding the voice coil down and fits around the tweeter magnet, remove and replace with the old voice coils and use the same wave guide and magnet as the original.
