Mitsubishi DA Stack Score

Been watching these for several days and told myself if they were still available by the weekend I would check them out. I once owned a DA-F10 tuner a while back and could tell that Mitsubishi gear from this time oozed quality!

Since then I have been looking thinking I wanted one of the DA series amps at least but they have been few and far between. But when I saw the add in my local CL I pulled the trigger.

Think I got these for a fair price for both parties. Lets say it was under 5 bills. Only issue I can find is one of the meter lights is out

Picked up these 4 pieces.

DA AF15DC Amplifier
DA F20 Tuner
DA P20 Pre Amp
DA M10 Meters

Got all the original manuals too.

Hooked these up temporarily last night to my AR 3's to see how it sounded and make sure all the inputs checked out. Played some Jazz; McCoy Tyner, some Chet Baker, Bill Evans. Found the sound very clean and crystal clear. Brought the mids and highs to life, WOW. Thought bass was a little on the light side initially so I threw on some AC/DC and cranked up Sin City and turned the volume up two clicks and there was the bass these 3's are capable of, holy shite this amp is nice. Effortlessly powered the AR's with ease, and barely got warm.

Going to try this with my JBL L96's later and bet it sounds great too.

I have been listening to tube gear exclusively for a while now and I forgot just what this big high current solid state gear is capable of. Think I got the best of both worlds now. Love tubes but this could change my mind if I had to have just one system.... God forbid.

Any how enough talking and time for some pictures. I will give these a more permanent install soon. Just want to listen to it :thmbsp:

Have not had time to play with the tuner but I know it works.

Nice score I'd love to have those meters for my DA-A10DC. I can't figure out why someone, not you, would have the preamp and the meters. How do you decide which to use :)

I know but until I get the lamp replaced on the right meter it will bug me so I will leave it off for now :D

Nice pick up on the Mitsu stack. I brought home a 20 pre-tuner and the meter box a couple weeks ago. No amp though:sigh: My right side meter light was also out to. I installed a pair of member ckeeler's led bulbs (easy peasy) and I think the led look is the way to go.

Yes these are add on units that can be used with any gear. I didn't know Yamaha made them? Do you have any model numbers or links?

Motorstereo, thanks for the tip on the LED up grade I will look into that. Did you change the color? Any more details about it.

Totem, I did get the cable for the meters. It also works with the preamp so you can switch speaker inputs A or B from the pre instead of a little slider switch on the back of the amp.

Hooked this setup to my JBL's last night and they rock together. Since they are contemporaries they have a nice synergy, like they were made for each other.

So you can use the meters and the preamp simultaneously? I was under the impression it was one or the other.

elcoholic, I was using both briefly. I will look in the manuals and see what they say about it.

I was probably assuming that since you could only physically attach on front end or the other that you could only use one at a time. Since they are meant to be in a 19" rack then it makes sense that the preamp could be mounted adjacent to the amp. Doh!

FYI the rack that fits this series if I recall was the DR-720 and was one of the nicer looking priced at $380.
When new they actually supplied 1 of the cables with the stand.

Mechanically, you can mount either the meter or the pre-amp to the front of the amplifier. Probably makes most sense to mount the meter to the amp since that provides the meter panel with a solid footing.
You can plug the AC cord from the amp into the switched outlet on the meter, then you can use the meter switch to power on the amp. But the system is designed to switch the amplifier power on from the preamp to prevent 'thumping' the speakers. This will happen if the amplifier is powered up when the pre-amp is switch on or off. Very bad. So plugging the amp into the pre-amp and powering the amp up when the pre-amp is turned on prevents the thump, both at turn on and off due to the speaker relays in the amp. If you don't do it this way you must be very careful about the turn-on turn-off sequence. Turn the pre-amp on before the amp, and turn the amp off before the pre-amp.
Then you use RCA cables to connect the pre-amp, meter and amp together. It goes in that order: Preamp output to meter input, meter output to amp input. The pots on the meter will control the signal level into the amp. You can leave them turned all the way up and it will work the same as not having the meter installed in the path. There is a switch on the side of the meter that you set to match the model of the amplifier. This makes the meter output scale correct. Different model amps have different gain. I turn the level pots on the meter all the way down before powering up or shuttting down, then return them to all the way up when playing. Just another level of protection from the turn-on thump.
There is a special cable that allows you to control the speaker relays in the amp from either the meter or the pre-amp (speaker A-B-OFF). You don't need it. If it isn't connected, then the switch on the amp controls the relays. If you connect the special cable from the amp to the meter or the pre-amp, then the switch on that unit controls the speaker selection. Either way, the amp still controls the relays for power on delay and overload protection, so it is fine to leave the switch always set to whatever speaker set you have. No need to switch it on and off each use.
Some amps are set up so that you can select speaker A, B, or both, while others are set up so that only A or B can be selected, not both. If you use the meter , you can select only A or B, not both. If you use the pre-amp, you can select A, B or A+B.

Edit: I have seen meter units with SPEAKER A, B and A+B while others have A or B only. Not sure which you have.
