Mitsubishi DP-EC8 - Tone arm will not lower to disc

I have a Mits DP-EC8. It has been packed away for over twenty years. I recently pull it out and there is one problem, when I press start the tonearm will raise from the rest stop and the arm will proceed to swing over the disc. The problem is it continues to swing over the disc, never lowering on to the disc, then it returns to the rest position. When I stored it away it did not have this problem. If it turns out it needs parts I will probably part with it, no pun intended.

thanks for the help

Most likely it's not sensing the record on the platter, that crystal looking dealio at the back left, that's the record size emitter lamp that tells the sensors on the platter what size record spinning is on it and sets the rotation speed, plus where to drop the arm, this might be your issue.

The light does come on and the correct disc size seems to detected. If I put an album on it sets the speed to 33 if I put on a 45 it will set to 45. So it seems that some part of the light functionality seems to be working.
