MM carts at 1g, MC carts at 2g. How much record wear?

For the Dual CS 5000, I recommend getting an Ortofon OM 10-OM 40 or any between. Optimal for that tonearm.

That has crossed my mind. I do have a few OM bodys that the styluses met dastardly ends. That would be later as budget permits.

FYI, there is an aftermarket upgrade (VividLine) stylus for that Ortofon OM 10 body.

I installed the the AT30E a few days ago to give a listen. Set at 1.85g, will adjust as needed.

I use a Denon DL-103 and am not concerned about excessive record wear. I love my DL-103 and wouldn't have another cartridge.

I also have a 103 and thought I would never upgrade. Pricey yes but, I only have a few years left.

I seem to favor the heavier end of the manufacturers specified range.

Tracking too light usually sounds crappy and certainly can eat up the grooves.

I never worry about wearing out a record, I keep my records clean and I keep the alignment correct ... I worry more about wearing out myself.

FWIW - My understanding is that if you have a really really really really really good arm, you can set the VTF at the low end of the range. But most arms are not that good, and setting VTF at the (too) low end of the range may allow the stylus to chatter and ride up in the groove which causes damage. Running at the high end of the VTF range prevents this.....

I guess the point I was trying to get at is that, price being equal, are most MC carts in the heavier VTF range than MM carts due to the stylus or body design. And at the price points being equal, will a MC sound "better" than a MM provided that they have the load recommended for them.

VividLine inferior to OM 20 or higher to some degree. OM 40 beats any Shibata, and genuine OM styli still available.

For fun I've been using an old Magnavox mono system which has an old Garrard turntable that tracks at 5 grams. No wear issues.

Not that I'm arguing, but there really is no way to know whether it's causing wear -- unless you make a recording of the first play and the 1000th play.
