I insisted on cash and got it.
Good to know.
When I sold my MGB a few years ago for a paltry $2,500, I insisted on cash and got it.
Reason is that they get cash delivered from the nearest fed reserve bank or main branch on an as- needed basis. Your local branch office ain't sitting on a dumpster full of cash in the vault. At least how it was explained to me.On the other side of things---as the buyer--it's hard to get lots of cash from most banks. I got $25,000 a couple years ago to buy an RV, but i had to give the bank 3-days notice!
Thanks for all the input. I spoke with the buyer this evening. He clarified that he intended to send USPS Money Order and was willing to wait until I had a chance to cash the MO before shipping the unit.

Nobody uses money orders any more -- I'd bet it's a scam. If the buyer can send a money order, they should be able to send an e-transfer instead.I'm selling a piece of gear on local CL. An out-of-state buyer wants to purchase the gear. He wants to pay with a Money Order. There's no expectation that the gear will ship before the Money Order is received. Nothing else 'smells' fishy about the deal.
I've never accepted a Money Order for gear so I'm wondering if there are any scams I need to be aware of and any precautions I should take to avoid being scammed.
Thanks,
Joe
Dead wrong. Many of us prefer anonymous transactions that are over & done as soon as funds transfer. Cash is still king. Like it or not. Money orders are most assuredly very legit, especially when sourced from banks or post offices, have been for decades. I've never had a problem with this process except when it took 11 days for usps to get one from here ( n.e.ohio) to the D.C. area a few years ago. Many sellers on BT & elsewhere use nothing but checks/ money orders, myself included.Nobody uses money orders any more -- I'd bet it's a scam. USPS is a Federal dept if anyone tries to steal or alter them it is a federal offence....always use USPS money order...Thanks. No, there aren't any 'conditions' for the sale, just a Money Order for the sale + shipping amount. I was able to look up his CL Name and find an address that matches the zip code it will be shipping to. He wants the package shipped to his work address, which checks out as well.
I have heard that USPS Money Orders are safer but I'm not sure why?
Eh, to each their own. I trust almost nothing these days, have seen too many scams over the years.Dead wrong. Many of us prefer anonymous transactions that are over & done as soon as funds transfer.
