Mono - can we talk mono?

So I’ve been slowly going through a Stromberg Carlson AR-37, the unit had to be completely gutted. Ended up drilling out all the rivets and installing all new tube sockets. Waiting on a few new parts to arrive. I was going to replace the chokes with new ones, but decided to clean the originals up as one is a tar-filled one. Decided to do some wrinkle paint on them and fancy them up a little just for the sake of doing so.

As you can see it was pretty rough, it was also damaged in shipping and I needed to use a vice to flatten out the chassis.

Got the shell off this one and it looks rather clean fro being 78 years old. The wax still feels nice. No rust on the iron. Couldn’t be happier.

It’s hard to tell in the pictures as it’s still wet but got a great coverage and the wrinkle pattern is getting nice and tight.

Goes on gloss and wrinkles up as it cures. Stuff is a lot of fun.

It’s being converted to a power amp.

These are from 1953, early to jump on the hi-fi bandwagon.

I like the early 50s stuff, I have a few pieces from the 40s and 50s but not much. I do have a few stentorian drivers one from 1955 and one from 1953. I also have a regency amp with massive transformers, it’s a 6v6 amp. I don’t think I’ve posted it to this thread yet. It needs some work but it’s in clean shape.

The beginning of the hifi era was really the introduction of the LP record in 1948, and especially the GE variable reluctance and pickering flux valve mono pickups. The first few years of the LP encouraged lots of neat amplifiers and speakers to be developed.

Yea I have an early Knight idler with a Knight branded Empire cart, was one of the 1st stereo carts and can be bridged to play mono. I like a lot of the early stuff as it’s harder to get ahold of and a lot of it is really unique.
