More Altec A7's

Metal Master
I picked these up today (with help). One pissed off boss, one broken cell phone, a very friendly warning from the NC Highway Patrol for towing an unregistered trailer with no lights or reflectors, and a half tank of gas. It was very rough looking neighborhood as well. Had to hall the two cabs on the right side of the pic over 200 yards through the woods. All of the cabs are in pretty decent shape, better than the two pair I already have. No woofers, three 811B horns with 802-D drivers, and three N-800-D crossovers and one N-500-G crossover. The one black cab had the N500 in it and I assume it was used with a 511 horn which was MIA. Got it all for $25.00 less because of it. Total was under a C-note. I haven't tried anything out yet. Should be a fun weekend.

HomerJ, see the part about the broken cell phone as a result of the pissed off boss. I'll give ya a call soon.

dgwojo, I'm gaining.

The cabinets is the hardest thing... you couldn't buy the wood for a C-note.

An electric sander and some paint, you'll have these things humming in no time.

OK, how'd you break the cell phone? The rest sounds par for the course.

The boss called me as I was hooking up the trailer and I tried to multitask and dropped it on the concrete. I'll bet I've dropped it a million times in the shop and slung all kinds of grinding sparks at it and it just keeps going. It seems to be fine excepting the battery doesn't seem to have a charge and won't take one. The two cabs on the right are in really nice shape. Just minor repairs and some paint. I was bummed about he missing horn. I'll get over it.

Put 803As in the verts if possible. Very good upper and midbass, I had some of those a long time ago.

Now I have some again but not with 803s. :-)

That is what this guy had in them. One set each 803A and 803B. Sold two nights before. It would have been nice to have them. I do have an extra set of 421-8H's here. That should get me going on a full second set. I'm thinking of an 816 cab w/woofer and the extra 811 horn for a center channel. Should be a pretty stompin HT setup :scratch2: . It's a thought anyway.

You are turning into the King of the A7's Macaltec. I have always wondered what it would be like to have a whole HT system using A7/A5's. I guess you are going to find out! :thmbsp:

If I was actually going to try it I would have just enough room in the center of all the speakers for one chair. Talk about near field listening.

I'm happy to inspire you, these would be ideal tube amp systems with their 16 ohm drivers, great haul!! Dave.

I hadn't given much thought to them being 16 ohm. That won't match well with the 421-8H's unless I bi-amp will it?

Very cool!

We may have a new winner in the loud as he!! home theater setup.

Retro you may have some competition.

Yes, bi-amping would do it!!

Way to Score, Jason!

Let's see, that brings the count to 5 when you get all the drivers, doesn't it? :scratch2: I guess you could do an HT setup with those! Of course, you'd need a subwoofer to get true 5.1 sound. :D :lmao:

Seriously, looks like a nice buy for the price. One day I'll get down there and hear 'em! :music:

Just remeber who tipped you off.......

I got ya.

Just checked the DC resistance one is 6ohms, one is 12 ohms, and one is 13 megaohms. Maybe some replacements have been made. Gonna pull them apart and have a look.

Well, I have two good diaphragms but they don't match. The one shown on the driver is reading 6.5 ohms, one of the other two is showing 12.5 ohms. The third appears to be burnt and shorted. Can somebody tell me what I have here? I'm also curious about the N800D XO's. Are these the type that are encased in a tar like substance? If so are they likely worth using or should I just replace them? And finally what about this green paint? It's not in that good of shape. Will I destroy any desirability/historical value (like I'm gonna get rid of em) if I was to glass bead them and paint them black? Oh, one more. What are the differences in the 802, 806 and 808 drivers? I have, obviously, the 802D's, and some 808-8A's. Which ones would you guys say to send to GPA for a remag and new diaphragms?

I think you are gonna have to take a number and get in line :D . One complete set will be mine and there really isn't a second complete set.
