More Altec A7's

Well, I have two good diaphragms but they don't match. The one shown on the driver is reading 6.5 ohms, one of the other two is showing 12.5 ohms.

The 6.5 ohm is 8 ohm impedance. The 12.5 ohms is 16 ohm impedance.

The third one has released its magic smoke.

Green paint... you can get that Hammertone green at Walmart. I think Krylon or Rustoleum makes it.

I finally tried listening to them. The 8 ohm works fine but the 16 ohm had very, very low output. Looks like I need to save up for some new diaphragms. I may try some of the Eminence PSD2002's that I've heard about (Paul). Crossovers seem to work but I'm sure are out of spec. Still wondering if I'd be best of to duplicate and move the originals down the road :scratch2: ? I had decided that there is not enough of the original paint left to leave them as is. They'll all be bead blasted Monday @ work and repainted. Fuscia or hot pink?

802----1" throat, aluminum diaphragm

806---same as 802 but a shorter body and smaller magnet; most often used in hi-fi applications

808----an 802 (same body and magnet) but with "symbiotic" high power diaphragm with mylar surround (photo at left of the three above)

804---same as 806, earlier nomenclature

807---806 with symbiotic diaphragm

So is any one more/less desireable?

I fixed the 16 ohm diaphragm. The terminals of the cap were contacing the flat wire going to the VC. A quick rotation of the cap and it is singing. Still got a mismatch pair though.

Personally, none of the diaphragms pictured are of much use, the symbiotik would only be good for PA use, those other two are aftermarket generics, the look Epitome to me!! I'd have Bill at GPA recharge them all and load them up with 34647 aluminum diaphragms, they'll really sing!! Dave.

I figured I would do that eventually. Gotta move some of these "lesser brand" speakers to make room and money for the good stuff. Still questioning the quality of use left in the XO's. Anyone have any input?

I've never opened a set of N800D's, I don't think they have the tar but they are 16 ohms, Dave.

They are not full of tar but enough to make working on them a major
PITA. Just wondering how well they can do their job given the age.

Many are still in service in theatre's so unless they were abused they probably are fine, Dave.

That leaves me unsure of getting 8 ohm or 16 ohm diaphragms. If I go 16 I can use the XO's but then I have to get some 16 ohm woofers. If I go 8 ohm it seems that the XO frequncy of these will be at 1600 instead of 800. Which seems reasonable to me. Just speculating at this point.
